Chicago Non Profit needs your support to create Community Café!

Unique Sweets is a Chicago-based non-profit seeking your support in bringing to life our vision for a Community Café!

With your support, we’re working to create a multi-functional café where Autistics and people with disabilities can obtain employment, job training, socialize and share their talents while serving delicious sweets and great coffee to the public.

The Community Café fosters a welcoming space that encourages people from all walks of life to come together. We aim to create a social gathering experience like no other, promoting unity and understanding in our community.

Problem we are trying to solve:   

• Social isolation is often a problem for autistic people because the majority of available resources are aimed at assisting children or parents of children with autism and not autistic adults.
• Almost one-third of young adults with ASD were socially isolated, with no contact with friends, no phone calls, and no invitations to socialize.
• Data is emerging that demonstrates adults with Autism are chronically underemployed.
• More than 66% of young adults on the Autism spectrum are unemployed and are not engaged in higher education 2 years after exiting high school.

The unemployment rate for people with disabilities who are ready and willing to work is typically twice that of the general non-disabled working population. See the Bureau of Labor Statistics employment status of civilian population chart.

About Unique Sweets

Unique Sweets is a Volunteer run organization that provides opportunities for Autistics and people with other disabilities and their friends and family to be part of a supportive and inclusive community.  Through the preparation and sale of baked goods, social outings, workshops and support groups, Unique Sweets has made a difference in the lives of many. 

In 2022, this volunteer-run organization offered over 20 opportunities for inclusion that ranged from working in the commercial kitchen to participating in social outings. Our autistic-operated bakery in Chicago is preparing to open a bakery and café storefront to share their gifts and delicious treats in a welcoming and inclusive space.

Since the pandemic, Unique Sweets has provided delicious baked goods and Caribbean-inspired pastries to people all across Chicago.
