Introduction to the Campaign
Earlier this year, myself and a few close friends worked together to release a project called Harvard : #ThankYouBlackWomen. The multimedia project, which consisted of both video content and a photo album featured black men and women. The goal of the project was to remind black queens around the world like my mother, my sister and the black women at Harvard, of how beautiful and important they are regardless of skin tone, hair texture, or body type. We as black men, and as a society at large, too often neglect and fail to give our beautiful black women the respect they are due. The #ThankYouBlackWomen project was meant to be thank you to the black women in my world whom I don’t tell them how much I appreciate them enough. The success of the campaign was a testament to the power of a genuine thank you. However, I realized quickly that the campaign was just words, and that actions speak much louder. It's time to take action. That's why we are looking to create the Harvard: #ThankYouBlackWomen Talent show fundraiser in partnership with the Dorchester Boys and Girls club and the Sebeccly Cancer Society.
The Causes
We are looking to raise $5000 in donations. The donations will be split amongst two causes: The Boys and Girls Club and the Sebeccly Cancer Society.
The Dorchester Boys and Girls Club:
I’ve spent the past 4 years working with the children at the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club and have seen firsthand the huge impact that being at the club can have on the lives of our youth. In particular, I’ve seen the impact that an immersion into the arts can have for these young kids. As part of this initiative, we will be hosting the members of the Club at Harvard for a talent show, in addition to donating some of the money raised through the fundraiser to the art activities at the Club. We hope that these donations will help these beautiful black princesses develop into the queens they are destined to be, and help the young black men at the club develop into kings who know properly appreciate the women in their lives.
Sebeccly Cancer Care:
Sebeccly Cancer Care is a not-for-profit cancer care and advocacy organization. They focus on providing information services on cancer to Nigerian women and creating supportive services to enable those living with breast cancer. Their goal is to advocate for improved cancer health institutions in Nigeria and for the coverage of breast cancer treatment under Nigeria's National Health insurance. Breast cancer is an illness that presents a significant and unique challenge to women across the world. Sebeccly Cancer Care empowers women by using their platform to voice the opinions of women inflicted with breast cancer and offering this women information on breast cancer, funds for treatment and even recovery products such as prosthesis bras and wigs for survivors to reintegrate into society. This past year I’ve lost both my aunty and grandmother to breast cancer, and any steps I can take to help someone else avoid that experience
