Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research hasn't added a story.
Hello,
My name is Jade Nicolette Harriell, daughter of the late Fred Harriell, Jr. In 2003, I made a promise to myself and to my father that I would raise money to support sarcoidosis research. Well, I'm proud to say that it’s twelve years later and I'm fulfilling my promise!
My father, popularly known as 'Big Fred' and 'Freddy Boy', was born in Coatesville, PA on March 16, 1951. The only son of the late Fred Harriell, Sr. of Fort Pierce, FL and Alberta Ford of Coatesville, PA, he was a vibrant and principled man who dedicated his life to rallying for equal wages and civil rights for minority and underprivileged communities. Most of his career was spent as a sous chef and union shop steward at the Mayflower Hotel of Washington, DC. He spent the last years of his life as a business agent and labor organizer with the LOCAL 25 Hotel & Restaurant Union.
Big Fred's impact on his local community in Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C. was tremendous. He had an especially optimistic outlook on life that led him to become a role model and mentor to many of the neighborhood's youth. As a trusted friend and neighbor, he was able to touch, move, and inspire others to fight for decent wages and leadership positions in their careers. His hobbies and interests included travel, public advocacy, catering, and FISHING. In fact, he was appointed to the Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Commission where he served in various capacities for several years. Some of our fondest memories family memories of him include trips to beaches along the eastern seaboard, fishing off of piers and boats, and 'raising hell' on picket lines.
My father lost his life at the tender age of 52 in 2003 due to complications from sarcoidosis. Our family is committed to raising awareness around this disease so that patients can live longer, and have more comfortable lives. We urge you to make a generous donation to the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research to support its patient registry initiative, patient resource education program, clinical trials initiatives, and more.
Today, Big Fred is survived by his wife Sandra Harriell, mother Alberta Harriell, sister Leslie Harriell-Turner, daughters Dr. Kysha Harriell and Jade Nicolette Harriell, sons Marcus Packer and Fred Harriell, III, and grandsons Marcus Cooper and Fred Harriell, IV. He is also survived by his childhood best friend, Gary Gant, and a number of other friends and loved ones who want to see an end to this debilitating disease.

Thanks, so much for your love and support!
Sincerely,
Jade Nicolette Harriell
