As many of you know, my feisty, sweet cat Zoey is my heart. She is 13 years old, and she is both troublesome and incredibly loving. Right now, Zoey needs some medical care, and I am not in a financial position to fully fund her care.
Last month, Zoey started limping on her front left leg. The vet assumed she had a sprain, gave her some pain meds, and told me to bring her back if it didn't improve. Her limp improved for a couple of weeks, but then started to worsen. On Monday, December 14, I brought Zoey back to the vet, and they decided it would be best to book her in for a sedated x-ray and bloodwork. This testing was supposed to take place on Thursday, but then on Monday night, Zoey had a terrible bout of pain - it was heart-wrenching. Thankfully, she improved with a strong dose of pain medicine and I was able to get her in for her x-ray and blood work the next morning (Tuesday, December 15).
After her x-ray, the vet called me and gave me the worst possible news. Zoey's front left leg bone and shoulder blade are deteriorating in a way that is consistent with cancer - likely osteosarcoma. After the vet consulted with a radiologist and an oncologist, she determined that the best and most feasible option for Zoey is amputation of her front left leg. This will potentially give Zoey another 2 years to live - without the surgery, it will likely be a matter of weeks (this depends on how she responds to the pain meds). The cost of the amputation will be around $2,500. On top of this, her pain meds are about $170/month, and there will likely more costs after the surgery, e.g. follow up appts, etc. The exams and testing we have done this week have cost an additional $1000.
I know that 2020 has been so terribly difficult for all of us, particularly those who have lost loved ones, and who have lost their income and livelihoods. It is a terrible time to be asking for this kind of financial support. I want my friends and community to know that I have no expectations - your love and good thoughts are more than enough as I navigate this heart-breaking time. A few friends have asked for ways to help, so I thought I'd set up this fundraiser because the primary tangible support that we need right now is the resources to pay for this life-saving surgery and palliative care.
If you cannot contribute money right now, I understand fully and completely. Please share this fundraiser, and send some love and light to my sweet Zo. So far, the pain meds are doing a great job and she is comfortable and still up to her regular antics (literally the minute her sedation wore off yesterday she was up on the kitchen counter looking for scraps). While I know that 13 is the beginning of the senior years for a cat, I also know that Zoey is not done just yet. She has so much more trouble to cause, cuddles to give, and butter to steal off the counter top. I am working on being ready to say goodbye, and will make that difficult decision when the time comes. For now, my primary goal is keeping her comfortable and doing everything in my power to access this surgery for her.
