We have English language training books. Nicaragua's national university, UNAN-Managua, is eager to get them and distribute where needed. When we've raised shipping fees, we will ship approximately 1500 pounds of high-quality teacher resources. More

Objective: to place high quality English-language teaching materials in the hands of educators in Nicaragua.

My name is Dale Hunter, formerly the dean for ESL at Vancouver Community College. I was in Nicaragua last year and connected with the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, UNAN-Managua. I learned UNAN has almost no budget for training materials, and depends on donations of texts from embassies and foundations.

UNAN-Managua trains English teachers for public high schools throughout Nicaragua - those high school Engish programs are an important key for access to jobs and opportunities for young Nicaraguans. UNAN has a strong development and social justice mission, and they give good opportunities to deserving young people from poor families and poor communities. UNAN supports public high school English programs across Nicaragua, and can make much-needed materials available to them as well.

BC public and private educational instutions, including VCC, have good, usable resources made redundant by program change or that are older, but still of value. I told people in the English Department at UNAN that I and others in the English language training sector in Vancouver could try to obtain some of those resources on their behalf. Their response was enthusiastic. UNAN's School of Education and Languages officially requested access to such resources from Vancouver Community College and VCC agreed.  Retired teachers from VCC and other public post-secondaries have also donated significant amounts of teachers' references and teaching resources from their own shelves.

We are asking you to help cover the costs of ocean shipping, and get these resources to Managua. The cost for palletizing, shipping and clearing customs for about 1000-1500 pounds of books is approximately $3,000.  We have promised there will be no cost to UNAN.

Any surplus funds above actual costs for this initial shipment of used books will be used to purchase more resources for UNAN's teacher training programs and for public high school English programs in Nicaragua. We guarantee all funds raised will be used to fund a gift of teaching resources.

We will publish an accounting of all moneys raised and spent.
