GetUp Stage Company began in the summer of 2010 with a mission to combine the talents found in Bristol’s two high schools and produce a musical. The show was RENT and we had 20 amazing kids from Eastern and Central—many of whom are still friends. It was an amazing summer and ultimately launched what GUSCO is today: a high school/college theater camp that produces works that are either newly available for amateur production or infrequently produced with young adults due to level of difficulty, casting requirements, content, etc.  We have been able to recruit young actors from all over the state and we pride ourselves on excellent production quality and professional practice.

But right now, we are struggling.

The tuition in years past had increased steadily from $100, to $150, and recently $200, and that’s when we started to feel the devastating pull of kids telling us they couldn’t afford to do our shows even though they wanted to.  We believe that financial need should never get in the way of a talented young person with a passion for the stage but the reality is we have debts that need to be paid and producing a musical with a live orchestra, costumes, set, props, lights and sound costs—at MINIMUM—$8,000-$10,000.

Last summer we were awarded a grant to help us cover the rental fee for the theater. This is money we usually garner from tuition.  Using the grant money helped us defray part of the tuition cost which thereby allowed more young people to participate.  This year, we did not win a grant and although we carried over money in the bank and held a fundraiser this winter, we find ourselves in the red after we consider the rental of the show itself, the technical needs and design elements, space rental for rehearsals and performances, and miscellaneous production costs like printing programs and tickets, etc. Not only that, but student tuition is back to $200.

What we are asking for from you is a small contribution that will help us reach our bigger goal—we would like to keep tuition at $100 or $150 and can do that if we can cover the cost of renting the rights to produce our show ($1750).

We appreciate ANY donation—some of you have even provided tuition money in the past for our kids who struggle to make ends meet.  That is, of course, amazing... but even $10 can help! Anything you are able to share will add up and if you would leave your name (as opposed to being an anonymous donor) we would love to list you as a sponsor in our program! Corporate sponsors are also welcomed!

Consider this:

$5 is the cost of a costume piece from Goodwill!

$10 can cover two props!

$20 can purchase an ENTIRE costume for an actor.

$50 covers the cost of printing our tickets

$100 buys our paint!

$150-$200 covers tuition for a person who can’t afford it

If we can defray the $1750 we need to rent the scripts, we would be in a much more comfortable place to decrease tuition and we can continue to produce high quality musical theater with incredibly talented teens!
