Darin Phillips hasn't added a story.
This is Dada, one of our good friends, she lives with me, Hope, Jojo, Topista, and Patience.
Dada survived the 1994 Rwandan genocide as a girl. She lost almost her entire family. Slept in outhouses for over year after the genocide. When she finally got a job she saved up and moved into a shed so small she could not even lay down. The roof didn't even cover the entire space and she locked the corrugated tin sheet door with a sock.
Being the open hearted woman she is, she invited two other homeless women to live with her. They kidnapped Dada and sold her as a sex slave to an HIV+ man who had just lost his wife to AIDS. After some weeks she managed to escape and returned to her home to find her roommates had fled - thankfully she tested negative after the repeated assaults.
She met Hope shortly after this point and they became friends. Dada has never been to school and is functionally illiterate. She works sweeping the market and makes $26 per month.
Kigali is one of the most expensive cities in Africa and one of the most difficult cities to find a job if you are uneducated. The only hope for people without skills to make it is to sell things on the street, which is illegal. The police often harass street vendors with undercover raids. We have been caught up in stampedes of street vendors caused by baton wielding police. It is a tough situation here for the extremely poor.
Last week, Dada got tricked by a local merchant to buy a sack of used and damaged shoes to resell. Since Dada struggles with self confidence, math and reading, and is very trusting, the woman was able sell her the sack of shoes for more than the market rate. Now Dada is in debt to the woman, who made her sign a contract, for $75. If she does not pay it she will go to jail, yet the shoes are in such poor condition she can only make about half of what she paid for them. So she has been giving them away.
We had an idea to help Dada get out of debt and stay out of jail. A 100% OFF shoe sale. If you want to buy a pair of Dada's shoes for $10 a pair, we will pay off Dada's debt and put the rest of the funds to work helping Dada get closer to her dream of 1. going to school and 2. learning how to taylor clothes.
Dada has agreed to take the shoes and give them away to the poor in our community who can not afford shoes. She is going to tell them that Jesus has provided shoes for them because he loves them and she will photograph them in their FREE shoes. Then we will post the photos on Facebook at the link below.
