UPDATE: Bills caught up, apartment approved, need 3000-3500 to
move in by Sept 29th. More info in the update tab. Thank you!!
Hi! I have to move out of my very unhealthy apartment before
the lease ends on Sept 30th and I need some help. I've been stuck in
this place for 3 years because my sweet husband had a huge mental
breakdown/personality flip from his previously untreated military
PTSD in 2020 and left. He is still working on recovery, unable to
support me as a life partner, and I don't know if he will ever get
well and come home.
It *was* affordable here (945/mo), but some bougie management company bought the complex, made no improvements, but jacked up my rent to $1200. If I were to renew the lease here, they're jacking it up to $1400. Obviously, that is insane for a place where my air conditioner smells like stinky feet, I can't breathe because of filthy air, and homeless dumpster divers are peeking in my ground-floor, not-very-secure 1980s windows. I can't even take my dogs out here because the grounds are all scalding hot gravel, loads of poop, trash and rusty nails—they have to use potty pads on my patio.
During the first year of the crisis with my husband (and all while having my own nervous breakdown), I started my own home business working as a creative virtual assistant (astraeava.com) and opened a couple of shops selling downloadable digital goods. I have the max amount of clients I can handle at the moment with my physical and mental disabilities, but I am still barely getting by. I am behind on the power bill by $183 and my car payment by $809.
After months of searching, I found a beautiful apartment a few
weeks ago for only $1150...and got DENIED. I am disputing some of
the things on my credit; like $15k in student loans that were wiped
by a class-action suit but I'm being dinged for late payments still.
I even got dinged for having 3 names in my lifetime. (Excuse me for
being married twice)
They already gave away the apartment (I literally CRIED) so I
need to keep looking.
One issue is that no place is going to approve me when I am $800 behind on my car payment and they can see that. Nevermind I have 5 years solid rental history in Vegas now...I'm not in a position to be losing application fees all over town. But the other big issue is that everywhere is asking for massive deposits, up to a month and a half's rent plus fees, and I don't see how I can possibly come up with it in time. I am also going to need to hire movers at least for the furniture because I simply cannot physically move it.
Pet deposits at least won't be an issue because the pets are prescribed to me for my PTSD. I need to apply for apartments ASAP, but the car needs to be caught up first. I also have to be a little pickier than one normally would because the new place needs to be accessible enough to wheel my cart I use for groceries/garbage, shower safely, etc. (I have fibromyalgia and balance issues)
I'm embarrassed to be in this position at 40 years old, but I have to swallow my pride and remember that nearly everyone is struggling right now. Food, rent, and everything else has risen 40% in price in Las Vegas over the past two years. If I lose my vehicle, I will never be able to finance another one, and a disabled woman who lives in 110-degree weather needs a car.
Any help you can offer would be SO appreciated and would be put towards my car and power payments first and then applying for an apartment. I've only got maybe another month to secure a place.
Thank you for reading my story!
