Update: Today is the day! Big thanks to everyone who has offered their support and donations. This afternoon I'll grab a toothbrush and not much else (no wallet, cash, cell phone..) and  walk over to the shelter to check in. I'll be out of communication for 24 hours, and during that time I'll keep my ears and eyes open to learn how things work.

Update:  Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far! In light of the donations that some of you have made directly to Salvation Army, my goal is now to raise $2000 through Fundrazr. If you need a tax receipt, please contact me directly.

The Cause:  As a lawyer I've lived and practiced in Abbotsford for many years, and almost daily I wonder what I can do to help our community solve homlessness. So when the Chamber of Commerce asked for a volunteer, I said Yes!

What did I volunteer for? On October 15 I will experience what it's like to be homeless for 24 hours. I'll be dropped off at the Salvation Army's facility on Gladys Avenue with literally just the clothes on my back. I'll be processed in and sleep overnight. The next morning they will provide a life profle and I'll work on typical tasks that the homeless need to find shelter and access resources.

Our goal is to raise $30,000, which for a 20 bed facility represents about 10 days of operating budget to house and help homeless clients.

100% of money raised will go to the Salvation Army to fund its work with homeless people. Please make a donation.

A word about the "24 Hour Homeless Initiative":  The Salvation Army has developed the ‘24 Hours Homeless Initiative’ to be an authentic experience to help community participants better understand the dynamics and challenges of being Homeless and bring awareness to the advocacy and work that is being done by Salvation Army staff to move people toward securing housing and getting access to all the supports they need. It is our hope that lives and our community will be changed because of this exercise. The event takes place during the Homelessness Action Week.
