"One-Love" is a small non-profit micro-sanctuary for rescued farm animals. As ethical vegans, we believe that ALL animals deserve to be treated with respect and to live free from exploitation and harm. Sadly, our lives were forever impacted by a recent tragic dog attack on our beloved rescue pigs, Norman and Penelope. As a result of this attack, Norman and Penelope have suffered severe physical injury and psychological trauma. If you can help with Penelope and Norman’s recovery by donating toward their ongoing veterinarian expenses during this difficult time, we would be sincerely grateful. Please keep reading for full details on Norman and Penelope’s traumatic experience.
On March 23 2018, upon returning home from errands, we heard agonizing squeals and found two of the neighbor’s king shepherds (who we later learned were left to roam unsupervised while the neighbor ate lunch) viciously attacking our pigs inside their sleeping quarters (the dogs climbed the pig panel fencing enclosing the pigs' outdoor winter area and proceeded to climb through the small door into the pig’s sleeping quarters). There was blood everywhere and Norman was standing in front of/ guarding Penelope who appeared as though she was dead. In a complete state of shock, I somehow deterred the dogs and we managed to rush the severely injured pigs to OVC in Guelph. Miraculously, Norman and Penelope survived this attack, but they incurred tremendous injuries; their entire bodies are covered in lacerations, swelling, and bruising. Penelope suffered severe head trauma and both her ears were macerated and punctured; the surgeons feel she will lose her ears. Norman had his neck torn apart near his jugular, severe deep lacerations and tears on both hind legs, especially his hind right leg which was torn through several layers of muscle. In addition to the immense physical trauma and pain the pigs are experiencing, they are psychologically damaged and tremble with fear while sleeping and upon hearing any sudden noise. They have also suffered complications from the sedation/ surgeries and pain medications including constipation and anorexia which can be serious in pigs. After spending two weeks in hospital, the pigs were discharged and they are now recovering inside at home. They require constant wound care and monitoring as the risk for infection is significant. In addition to working so hard to help Norman and Penelope recover, we are faced with ongoing legal issues pertaining to the neighbor’s liability for their dogs- not to mention the unexpected costs that we have incurred. We hope to eventually receive reparation from the neighbors for the $10,000 in medical/ personal costs incurred as a result of this incident. In the meantime, however, we decided to create this online fundraising campaign as many of our supporters have inquired about donations. In the event that we receive reparation from the neighbors, we would like to direct any funds raised through this fundraiser to the purchase/ building of a new enclosure for Norman and Penelope. This enclosure would be located near the pig’s larger summer paddock so they don’t have to go back into the area in which they were attacked. Pigs have impeccable memories and I have no doubt that they will be traumatized by that space. We would be genuinely grateful for any assistance in helping Norman and Penelope recover during this extremely difficult time. Thanks for listening to our story and for caring about Norman and Penelope!
