Kara Little hasn't added a story.
Hi everyone - thank you for stopping by! We are Andrea Berg and Kara Little, and we would like to introduce you to John and Dandy.
We had a BENEFIT SHOW featuring the Vibram Souls at
the Irish Sport & Social Club on Saturday March 18. Thank you
to all who came out!
These contributions will assist John in beginning the insurmountable task of paying the Government Refugee Transportation Loans. If you were unable to attend, we invite you to contribute and share this campaign.
Andrea had the opportunity to meet these brothers on their flight to Canada 2.5 years ago, and has generated a circle of support around them as they begin their new life in Canada.
Brothers John and Dandy demonstrate the true meaning of perseverance and survival. Due to violent conflict in their home country of Democratic Republic of Congo, John and Dandy were captured by rebel forces and forced to flee their families and their home in 2006. The brothers spent a grueling 7 years and 8 months in a refugee camp in Uganda without any communication with their loved ones and only their faith to carry them through. John and Dandy left behind their mother, 8 siblings, and John’s wife and children. John and Dandy were chosen to be accepted into Canada as refugees and arrived in Edmonton in July 2014.
Two months before their departure to Canada, John was miraculously reunited with his wife and children; each of whom had assumed the other had perished in the conflict. A mutual friend from Congo randomly ran into both John and his wife on separate occasions in the refugee camp in Uganda and put them in contact with each other. John and Adel shared three children at the time and nine months after their brief reunion, a fourth was born. The family has since been separated for an additional 3 years while John began to build a new life in Canada.
It was on their maiden flight to Edmonton in 2014 that Andrea and her friend Joni had an opportunity to meet them. They were immediately struck by John and Dandy’s optimism, sincerity, and strong desire to fit in with their new Canadian lifestyle. Since their arrival, John and Dandy have both completed schooling, secured employment, embraced new Canadian experiences and developed strong friendships with locals.
After many setbacks and challenges with government officials and Canada Immigration over the last 2.5 years, John’s wife and four children will finally join him in Edmonton this spring! Other than the meagre financial support provided by Canada Immigration during their first year, John will need to provide for his family of 6 through his jobs as a Teacher’s Aide and Courtesy Clerk at Safeway.
In addition to living expenses, the family will be required to pay the Government of Canada the cost of their transportation loans and medical fees. For his wife and four children, these costs will exceed $14 000. Interest will begin to accumulate on these loans after three years. To assist John in beginning the insurmountable task of paying the transportation loans, we are sharing this fundraising campaign with you. We also hosted a benefit concert featuring the Vibram Souls at the Irish Sport & Social Club on Saturday March 18.
We encourage you to give generously to these well-deserving new Canadians! Thank you for your support!
