In the past few days, the horrific pictures coming out of Aleppo, Syria have gone viral. Dead children in the streets, citizens of the city sending terrified pleas for help... this is a situation that no conscious person can ignore.

My name is Lyra, and in 2007 I spent a month travelling through Syria. What shocked me was the kindness and friendliness of the Syrian people. From returning money I had accidentally dropped in Aleppo's ancient bazzar (destroyed in the civil war) to accompanying me to an emergency room and overseeing my care, the Syrian people won my heart. As a world traveller, I can honestly say that Syria was the safest, friendliest country I have visited.

I have personal reasons for being sensitive to the atrocities which are now occurring in Syria, but I am asking others to help save lives by donating money which allows lifesaving professionals to operate everyday.

The White Helmets are a group of first responders. They deliver emergency medical services to any injured person. Sadly, they are woefully underfunded and are in constant need of supplies. If you would like to learn more about them, visit www.thewhitehelmets.org. You can also watch a short documentary about them on Netflix. It's called "The White Helmets".

I am trying to raise $3,143.01 so that The White Helmets can purchase another defibrillator.

One defibrillator is not going to stop the carnage in Syria, but it will help to save lives. Throughout the war in Syria I have thought about all the kind, helpful, friendly souls who went out of their ways to help me, and I pray that they have escaped the violence, although the law of averages suggests that some did not. So I am reaching out to others in hopes that our combined efforts will help to save lives.

Money isn't easy for any of us to come by, and especially during the holidays, we're all running low on funds. One thing most of us can depend on is that we will receive gifts from our friends and family, and I suggest that anybody who wants to donate but lacks the funds can return a holiday gift and donate the money. In fact, that is how I made the first donation of the campaign. Even sharing this campaign over social networking sites will help immensely. I humbly ask all of you for help to make this campaign successful.

I wish everybody who reads this happy, healthy, and safe holidays. Much love to all of you
