Anonymous donors have challenged crew members and friends of Battleship IOWA to raise funds to repair and replace wooden decks on board IOWA. These donors will match dollar for dollar, to a maximum of $5,500, contributions to the Deck Repair Fund received by April 15, 2015. If the goal of $11,000 is reached funding should be sufficient for materials to reconstruct and repair wooden deck from the aft quarterdeck to the midpoint of Turret 3.
This area was chosen because it lies on the primary egress path for visitors and is part of the area used for special events. Hand‐selected Douglas fir will be used for this work rather than much more expensive teak wood. An epoxy adhesive will fasten the lumber to the deck. The steel deck will be cleaned and sealed before epoxy is applied and decking is laid down on the epoxy. The goal of this project is to use fir, rather than replace worn out plywood, to improve visitor safety and the overall appearance of the ship at a reasonable cost. This is a temporary measure and should provide an attractive and serviceable deck until we can fund major overhaul of the deck. Stan “Chips” Sato is ready to begin work. This is a restricted fund. Contributions will be used only for deck repair in designated areas. Once starboard deck reconstruction has reached the Flight Deck, the project team will turn its attention to the forward brow and reconstruct the deck between the Wardroom and forward quarterdeck. All contributions to the Deck Repair Fund are tax‐deductible to the extent permissible by law.
