Ben Goglin hasn't added a story.
I am a 31-year-old trans, genderqueer, queermosexual who has worked
and volunteered in community and public service for ten years, and now
I need community help to transition into a new service role. I live in
Richmond, BC, Canada, on the traditionally shared territory of the
Musqueam, Sḵwx̱ú7mesh (aka Squamish), Tsleil-Waututh, and other Coast
Salish First Nations.
I see my future in working to bring parent-focused birth
practises to the communities I'm part of (queer, trans, genderqueer,
fat, disabled, depressed, abuse survivors, leather/kinky,
non-monogamous, families in crisis, working class/poor, anti-racist,
etc.) through training as a reproductive doula (labour, postpartum,
abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirth--the full spectrum of pregnancy
and birth), and as a childbirth educator, including breastfeeding
consultancy. Currently, most practitioners in these roles are not
aware of or equipped to deal with the multitude of families and
parents actually in the world. As a member of
"non-mainstream" communities who is actively doing the work
of untangling and resisting oppressions, I am excited to bring my
experiences to these practises, and offer these practises to my communities.
The principles of consent and body autonomy also inform my
desire to engage in birth and family work; our bodies have gone
through a lot with us, and those experiences are integral to our
reproductive choices.
What is a doula?
Doulas support pregnant people and their families during pregnancy and labour; full-spectrum doulas also support people through miscarriages and stillbirths, and choosing abortion. Doulas can also provide support after labour. A doula uses many tools to support, including coaching, massage, organization, advocacy within the healthcare system, light housework, and simple companionship.

What will the money be used for?
As of November, 2014, my current goals are:
- attend DONA birth doula training through Douglas College ($400; two days, January 2015)
- attend DONA postpartum doula training, also through Douglas College ($550; four days, March 2015)
As well as registration fees, contributions will help offset lost
time from my primary job and commuting costs from my home in Richmond
to Douglas College's Coquitlam campus.
Future goals include:
- breastfeeding support training through Douglas College
- full-spectrum doula education through Full Spectrum Doulas in Seattle, WA (http://www.fullspectrumdoulas.org)
- networking with POC and Indigenous birthworkers
- seeking training to support pregnant trauma/abuse survivors and their families
- producing full-spectrum print and web resources for trans, gender non-conforming, bigender, agender, gender neutral, and genderqueer people
- childbirth educator training through Douglas College
Thank you so much for your support!
