This type of leukemia is rare in children and is very aggressive. The cells affected by cancer are the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The precursor cells never grow into the 3 different cell types, instead they grow into "blasts" that are large, have no function and quickly crowd out any healthy cells.
Immediately upon diagnosis, he was admitted to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he had a bone marrow biopsy, MRI and had a Broviac placed. his first phase of chemotherapy started on Halloween, 10/31/2012 and lasted until December 3rd - he endured a lot of sickness, pain and heart damage from the chemotherapy. After the first round and a second bone marrow biopsy, the doctor's decided that his best chance at being cured was a Bone Marrow Transplant. the news was devastating and hopeful at the same time. The risks were frightening and the possibility of a cure was worth fighting for.
Three more rounds of intense chemotherapy from 12/7/12 through 2/18/13 bought Matthew into complete remission from Leukemia, he was cancer free and ready for his bone marrow transplant.
A donor was located through the Be the Match Registy, a well-matched 9/10 HLA female from another country (we have not been told where) and the transplant was scheduled for 3/21/2013.
Matthew made it through the conditioning chemotherapy and transplant successfully. He had engraftment syndrome and soon after mild Acute GVHD (Graft vs. host Disease) of the skin which we are still dealing withbut is very manageable right now.
On Day +31 after transplant, Matthew got a virus called BK that caused hemorrhagic cystitis (bleeding urinary tract infection) and had to remain inpatient for another 16 days.
After 146 nights in the hospital, Matthew is finally able to recover at home. The standard time period for recovery from a transplant is one year, although complications and issues can push recovery well past the one year mark.
Under no circumstances are we ever expecting anyone to make a donation - but so many people over the past few months have asked me if there is a place they can go to online to make a donation. So I am finally creating that place. There was a previous fundraising site set up that had expired on 12/31/12 and there have been so many personal donations and fundraisers in the last 6 months that have been completely amazing!
I also am going to open up this site to anyone that wants to pay for their Beef and Beer tickets online - just let me know that you have done so and I will get your tickets out to you!
