Maggie Nazer hasn't added a story.
My name is Maggie Nazer, I'm a 22-year old Bulgarian-Palestinian and a Sociology major at Middlebury College. My involvement in development work began at the age of 16 when I founded a youth-led NGO in Bulgaria to engage volunteers in community service projects with institutions for disadvantaged people and partner with organizations throughout Europe to organize short-term youth exchange programs.
I have designed and implemented youth empowerment trainings on the West Bank, interned with UNDP in Jordan and most recently- at a NYC-based social enterprise providing consulting for nonprofits.
During my Sophomore year at Middlebury I took an Education Studies class where I first met Professor Claudia Cooper. I immediately knew that she was someone I wanted to follow, learn from and support. As she told me about the organization she started in Ethiopia, called The Global Family Iniative, I knew I had to get involved.
The Global Family Initiative, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, employs local women and gives home to abused children and orphans where they find love, encouragement and support to fulfill their potential.
I have been volunteering for GFI for over a year and next January, thanks to the Academic Outreach Endowment at Middlebury, will spend 5 weeks in Ethiopia conducting research for my senior thesis on women empowerment, in addition to doing Monitoring and Evaluation for GFI's programs.
With deep belief in GFI's mission and work, I decided to run this fundraiser and, with your support, help the organization get the much needed money to put their children to school.
The math is simple:
$200 facilitates a year of education for one child, $50 provides school materials and clothing.
The Children from GFI's Home and Learning Lions program (which helps single moms put their kids to school) are excellent students and enthusiastic learners. Yet, the gender gap regarding education in Ethiopia is staggering and girls are especially vulnerable as they are most likely to be pulled out of school. According to UNESCO: "In 2009, only 41% of girls survived to the last grade of primary education and there were only 30% enrolled in secondary education."
My personal experience has shown me that poverty cannot stop one from chasing her dreams and tapping into the magic that education brings: intellectual stimulation, personal growth, understanding of the world, a sense that you can make a difference, imagination and skills to give it a try. The key factors to success for people coming from difficult backgrounds are encouragement and support from others.
Together we can give the Gift of Education and Brighter Future to 5 girls- and why not even more?! : )
100% of your donation will go to its stated cause: to help girls go to school.
All raised funds will be used to pay school fees and buy school utilities on the ground in order to support the local economy.
So I kindly ask you to
spread the
word,
share,
invite friends,
donate!
THANK YOU!
