Torat Menachem hasn't added a story.
Hi,
My name is Leah Aharoni and I started this project on behalf of a bunch of my Niderman family cousins.
Our family has been scattered literally around the world by the Holocaust. Over the past 60 years, we have been slowly finding each other via newspaper ads, random online encounters, and even more random chance meetings (like picking up a conversation with a flight neighbor only to find out that he is your cousin).
To commemorate the memory of our loved ones, both those killed and those who survived but have since passed on, and to celebrate our reunification, we choose to help one school build a kitchen and establish a lunch program. And we need your help!
About the school
The Torat Menachem school in the Israeli community of Tel Tzion provides a long day of education to 160 boys and girls from the surrounding communities. (Tel Tzion and Kochav Yakov are two adjoining neighborhoods 10 miles away from Jerusalem. They are home to aproximately 1,500 families, with a very sizable population of new immigrants from France, the US, Russia, and Mexico.)
Many kids spend upwards of 40 minutes commuting to the school. Unlike most Israeli schools that let out at 1 PM, Torat Menachem provides an after-school program till 4 PM to give kids an extra boost and to allow working moms a chance to make a living.
While most of the kids come from large happy families, some kids have at least one parent who is not functioning in the home due to illness, depression, divorce, financial hardship and so on. The school serves a disproportionate number of new immigrant families who have no social or family support.
Many of these kids come to school literally hungry, because nobody fed them breakfast or packed them lunch.
Until now, the principal, Rabbi Yeshayahu Alperovich, has been cooking lunch for one kindergarten class himself. Payments by able parents cover the cost for everyone, so the disadvantaged kids are not embarrassed. However, he cannot cook for the entire school!
About the kitchen project
This is where we want to help. Through this campaign, we will help the school buy equipment to establish a proper institutional kitchen, which will serve hot lunches every day of the week. The lunch program will be self-sustainable, since the cost of all meals will be distributed among all the paying parents.
The school has a small facility, which it will refurbish to serve as a kitchen and equip the kitchen.
We believe that the program is extremely important not only because it will feed the kids, but also because it will give them a chance at an education.
A hungry child cannot study. S/he just doesn't have the attention span. These kids deserve a better future than the one their parents have. And we can give it to them by establishing this kitchen.
On behalf of the extended Niderman family, thank you in advance for your help. Whatever you can donate to the program will help. It all adds up in the end.
