My parents first became licensed for foster care to take in my cousin when we were young. She was eventually reunited with her parents. When I was in college, they again opened their home to foster kids. I want to provide an opportunity for members of the community to support foster families.

Winnebago County Department of Human Services continually recruits new foster homes to meet the needs of children and families. Foster parents provide care for children who cannot remain with their biological families for a variety of reasons. Typically, this may be due to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; neglect; a special needs child and/or delinquency issues.

Reading to children has many benefits including supporting cognitive development, improved language skills, preparation for academic success, increased concentration and discipline, improved imagination and creativity, forming a special bond with the child, and cultivating a lifelong love of reading.

This book drive will provide books to children in the foster care system. It will be a gift given to a child who may have little or nothing of their own. It would mean a fun picture book with a lesson for a young child or an activity book to engage an older child.

The goal is to donate 1,000 books. All donations will be matched 50% by Usborne Books & More. This can be accomplished with $5,500 in donations with a total of $8,250 worth of books being distributed to foster children in Winnebago county!
