LaShawn Redd hasn't added a story.
A 19-year-old man accused of firing a shot that injured two officers Sunday night apparently mistook police responding to a burglary call for home intruders.
One of the officers was hit by two shotgun pellets in his face and underwent surgery Monday at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, and the other has been released from the hospital, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.
“The good news is both are going to recover,” he told reporters outside the hospital.
The shooting happened about 11:45 p.m. in the 20500 block of Lesure Street when police responded to a burglary call. Craig said the teen, “fearing for the safety of his family,” fired a single shot from inside the home, which struck the officers in front of the house on Detroit’s west side, near 8 Mile and Schaefer Highway.
“The facts tend to suggest that the shot was fired because the subject believed that they were going to be burglarized,” Craig said.
People at the home called 911 in the late afternoon or early evening, and a second call was made from inside the home after police arrived at the scene that night, said Sgt. Michael Woody, Detroit police media relations director.
“That young man who fired the shot is extremely remorseful. The mother’s remorseful … They just want to make sure the officers are going to be OK,” Craig said.
Police said there had been an attempted burglary at the home on Thursday, and the residents called 911 that day, too. At some point after that, the grandfather gave the family a shotgun.
UPDATE: It has been reported that both officers have been released from the hospital and are recovering.
