Dear friends and family! Please help me make an impact!
I was blessed with the opportunity to go on a medical mission to Haiti in May of this year and was asked to fund raise $600 for medical supplies. This is not only to help with the work we will be doing while there but also to introduce people to the amazing non-profit organization (501 (c)3) called H.E.A.L (Health Care, Empowerment, Advocacy & Learning). H.E.A.L. is the organization behind this mission.
Although, I was asked to fund raise only $600 I would like to see if we can at least double this. The people of Haiti need all the help they can get and H.E.A.L. would like to bring as many supplies as possible to help these impoverished communities. You're donation can make a major impact!
Below is a little background on H.E.A.L. Also, if you do not feel comfortable donating via this crowd fundraiser please visit H.E.A.L.'s website at www.weareheal.com and check out their donation menu to donate directly. However, please message me to say what you donated via their website so I can let them know you were directed there by me. Additionally, if you donate through www.weareheal.com your donation will be tax deductable!!
Background: H.E.A.L. has been taking 3rd year medical students and allied health care professionals every year to Haiti since 2009 (before the earthquake) in order to provide much needed primary and urgent medical care to Haitians. They joined forces with the U.S. for the Children of Haiti in 2010 and have been providing medical care in their hospital, their orphanages and the rural village named Musotte (where they are hoping to build a hospital in the future). Musotte is a rural village, nestled atop the arid mountains of Eastern Haiti. It is a farming village, where many houses are huts with dirt floors, where it's inhabitants often use donkeys for transportation and the nearest hospital is a 45 minute drive away (by car...who knows how long by donkey or on foot). It was quickly realized that these people had very little, not even a simple pain reliever in their possession.
Last year H.E.A.L. spent 5 days in Musotte where they saw over 1000 people and did 150 Pap smears! They also started treating abnormal cervices with a cryogen, that can treat pre-cervical cancer (The number one cancer that kills women in Haiti). They created a clinic out of the church without running water or electricity. They created a triage area outside the church where the patients are sent to different stations to address their different needs. They mostly see patients with high blood pressure, peptic ulcer disease, worms, anemia, sexually transmitted infections, malaria, fungal infections, scabies, skin infections and occasionally typhoid and TB. They offer prenatal testing and Pap smears to all women. Their plan is to become a sustainable medical provision to the people of Musotte with the intent to provide year- long medications for those with chronic diseases.
A bit about Dr. Partovi: She started this venture in 2009 as a clinical instructor at a local medical school with just 4 medical students and since then have taken a total of 48 3rd year medical students to Haiti. Six returned (or are returning) as student leaders, three have joined as officers for our newest creation of a non-profit. Dr. Parvoti is a Family Physician, trained at Harbor-UCLA and stayed on as full time faculty for 6 yrs. She then joined different community clinics over the last 13 years mostly working with the homeless. She is the Medical Director for Homeless Health Care Los Angeles and just recently joined forces with LA County's Housing for Health Division of the Department of Health Services. She works with county's sickest homeless.
H.E.A.L. is an organization that advocates for health care for all especially in impoverished communities empowering residents of those communities to best care for themselves, loved ones and neighbors. We also promote the mission of introducing Poverty Medicine and Advocacy to students to best influence their career choices toward those that includes Poverty Medicine and Advocacy in their future.
Last year, our trip cost about $18,000 which paid for the medications and medical supplies that we brought, transportation, translators and housing for the students and the translators. The students and doctors purchase their own airfare.
We're inviting you to participate in providing for much needed health care to our patients in Haiti by sending donations. For example, $20 will treat 20 children with worms; $50 will test 50 kids for anemia; $100 will treat 70 kids with anemia; $200 will treat 33 people with malaria; $500 will test 83 women for HIV/Syphillis/Gonorrhea & Chlamydia; $1000 will pay for 3 translators for 3 days (we use 6 translators for 5 days); $2000 will pay for our entire transportation costs. You can donate via paypal through our Facebook Page (HEAL Haiti) or Web site (www.weareheal.com). We are a 501 (c) 3 non-for-profit organization
