Mom's sudden passing has left all of us heartbroken, and in the face of that heartbreak we are also having to deal with some unexpected and costly surprises.

Mom didn't have a life insurance policy - the joint policy that she'd held with dad was cashed out seven years ago when he passed. Since mom didn't work she is ineligible for the CPP death benefit, and there's no money to cover the funerary expenses. Her will had not been updated since 2005, ten years before dad passed away, and title of the house had not been updated since then.

Our brother Richard has taken care of Mom since we lost Dad, and for the last 2 1/2 years since the pandemic started he has put his life on hold and lived with her full-time, taking care of her and keeping her safe. Doing so has reduced his own income to a trickle.

Mom had started the process of updating her will this year at our urging to ensure that Richard's care and contribution was properly recognized, to transfer title of the house, and to ensure that family assets stayed in the family. WIth the current will as it stands title of the house will fall back to the bank and any assets are frozen in probate. We have been advised that the changes to the will she had submitted now have to be added as codicils in probate before anything can be resolved - a long and expensive process.

As her remaining sons we want to see her wishes met, we want to see our brother properly taken care of, and we want to ensure the safety of her estate, but we are not financially capable of making any of these things happen.

We need help. 

We are faced with $10,000 in funerary expense and at least $7,000 in legal expenses that we can't cover alone.
