UPDATE #3:
We recently learned terrible news that Penn State administration has chosen to initiate termination proceedings against Professor Baker for trying to safeguard students and faculty from a threatening person who many people witnessed was also openly sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and endangering the safety of students and faculty at a campus rally for academic worker rights. Penn State administration is completely disregarding the findings and judgment of the Centre County DA’s Office and District Judge Steven Lachman who, after careful review of the evidence, determined that Professor Baker did nothing wrong when attempting to deescalate a dangerous situation. It was assumed that after the DA’s Office dropped the misdemeanor charges and Judge Lachman found Professor Baker not guilty of harassment that Penn State administration would reinstate Professor Baker to his job duties. Instead, Penn State administration is prioritizing their own internal HR investigation over the findings of professional investigators. Many people in the local community also feel that the Penn State Police are pressuring Penn State Administration to fire Professor Baker because of his well-known community involvement and commitment to social justice as a teacher and activist.
This unfair treatment of Professor Baker is an injury to all of us who believe in the right to protect ourselves from threatening persons motivated by bigotry and that teachers should not face persecution for their commitment to social justice.
To win against these unjust misconduct allegations and save his job, Professor Baker will need to hire legal counsel with specialization in defending faculty members subjected to disciplinary proceedings. We’re asking for donations to help Professor Baker’s pay for these necessary attorney fees. With effective legal defense, Professor Baker will be able to present a strong case that we hope will lead to the dismissal of these proceedings and his reinstatement to his job duties.
UPDATE #2: Two of the charges against Oliver have been dropped
(misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct)
prior to his trial, and on Monday, November 8th he went to court and
successfully defeated the final charge of summary harassment! The
help of the lawyer and the broader support of the community was
instrumental in helping Oliver beat these ridiculous and unfair
charges. Thank you to everyone who donated to the fundraiser or who
has offered their support in any form! We are still waiting to hear
the results of the university’s investigation, but we are optimistic
that after being fully exonerated from all charges he can return to
his job duties.
UPDATE: the 4000 dollar goal has been reached. Thank you to
everyone who donated. Any additional contributions beyond the 4000
will go to additional legal expenses that may come up in this
process for Oliver, or other expenses related to the current
situation. Once again, thanks to everyone who has contributed,
shared the fundraiser, or otherwise supported Oliver during this time.
On August 27th at a faculty and student unity rally for a
vaccine mandate, attendees were confronted by a far-right
provocateur who attempted to physically disrupt the event through
aggressive, menacing, and antagonistic behavior. Many attendees
feared for their safety. They tried their best to ask the far-right
provocateur to leave the area. After the event, the far-right
provocateur called on Penn State Police to press charges against
rally attendees. Oliver is being unjustly charged with simple
assault, disorderly conduct, and harassment. To fight these charges,
Oliver requires the assistance of an attorney as his legal defense.
We want to fundraise 4,000 dollars to cover these costs.
If you know Oliver and want to help him or if you place value on
not having people unjustly charged by the police, please donate.
This is a crucial time for us to be there for another member of our
community in their moment of need.
If you prefer to donate through venmo, cashapp, or paypal,
donations can be sent here:
venmo: @EvanHiggins92
cashapp: $oliver22r
paypal: @Woliverb
If you send money through one of these means, please put “legal
defense” or something like this in the “note” section of the payment
so that we can keep track properly. Thank you.
