Crossroads. We go left, and it's a wrap, 10 years of rescue and done. We go right and the SOS will embark on 10+ more years into the future.

Late last fall, the SOS was paid a visit from the Department of Agriculture. No, no one "turned us in". More like stumbled upon. It was brought to my attention that in order to be in compliance with the State of Michigan, the SOS has to become a state licensed shelter, as we are housing adoptable cats in an outbuilding/structure and we are not solely foster based.

As most of you know, the new SOS building was built only a mere 2 years ago, and on a shoestring budget as I cashed in my retirement fund to follow my passion. And being licensed was not on my radar.....

So here we are faced with a major decision for the year of 2018. All of the walls need to be recovered with a sanitizable surface as do all window and door trim. The suggested replacement is "shower surround" type boards. Slick, glossy, non porous surface that can be easily disinfected to keep our residents up to the healthy standards of MDARD.

We have some minor fix-ups to do in our storage room and throughout the building but the primary focus is to cover the painted wooden walls we have now, plus quite possibly needing a ventilation system installed as well to keep a good flow of fresh air circulated throughout the shelter.

So here we are the crossroads of 2018. We must make the updates or shut the rescue down. No choices here. After much thought in my little brain and hope in my big heart, I chose to throw the decision to the many many friends and fans of SOS. We can do this right? Or at the very least try. I am not one that feels comfortable asking for funding....not my style or my liking, but this is for all of the future residents of the SOS. I am in this for the long haul if we can pull this mighty feat of raising the money to make the changes.

As my husband and I did, when we originally built this shelter, we will again do all the work ourselves. There will be NO hired labor, every dime will go to the materials needed to transform the SOS into the top quality Michigan State Licensed Shelter it was born to be. Please help us step up our rescue game and become one of the best little state licensed cat shelters in the north!

And as always, I thank you for the care you all have invested in my little hobby and lifelong passion....I appreciate every one of you.
