The Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) is an international network of researchers that was founded in 2006 by academics from different scientific backgrounds to investigate a variety of topics related to Internet Governance.

GigaNet was founded based on four principal objectives:

  • to support the establishment of a global network of scholars specializing in Internet Governance issues;
  • to promote the development of Internet Governance as a recognized, interdisciplinary field of study;
  • to advance theoretical and applied research on Internet Governance, broadly defined, and;
  • to facilitate informed dialogue on policy issues and related matters between scholars and Internet Governance stakeholders (governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society).

Once a year GigaNet is holding a symposium where its members and other participating academics are presenting and discussing their latest research projects and findings to support scientific progress in this specific area. The annual symposium is frequently taking place during the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) which in November 2015 will happen in the Brazilian city of João Pessoa.

This crowdfunding campaign was started to cover the running costs of the 2015 GigaNet symposium in Brazil which is organized by members of the network on a voluntarily basis. The arising expenses of the meeting include a basic catering (coffee break for all participants, water for speakers) and infrastructural and organizational items like photocopies, communication and technical equipment.

More information regarding GigaNet, its annual symposium and the IGF can be found on the websites

This campaign is administrated by GigaNet's Chair of Program Committee Daniel Oppermann whose function can be confirmed on the organization's website: http://giga-net.org/page/governance-structures.

Thanks a lot for your support!
