I'M MOVING AT THE END OF THIS MONTH...and, believe it or not, I've actually found an apartment I can afford to move into here in L.A.! As I've shared several times before, my rent here in hyper-expensive Los Angeles takes up over two thirds of my total old-age social security income, and that doesn't even include such expenses as prescription co-pays, transportation, laundry, dry cleaning, payments on debts (mostly, uninsured hospitalizations and other medical), or even FOOD. To get into even a modest apartment in this city costs at least $2,000 --- for first and last months' rent; security deposit; utility deposits, credit check. And trust me, I do NOT have any two thousand bucks lying around!
Of course, there are towns and cities where I could move into a house or apartment for much less than $2,000, and I've long considered returning to my hometown, Oklahoma City, for exactly that reason, but this past Sunday cemented for me the idea that my REAL home and family are right here, in Los Angeles --- nowhere else. There were so many people at church that day who rarely attend anymore, and many of them --- whom I remember as teenagers and even pre-teens --- were there with their children, and GRANDchildren. Speaking of feeling old! But it was clear to me that day that the people of St. John's are my family --- and I don't want to leave them! Since I'm a people-person, I do happen to have many, many acquaintances, and I probably have more friends than most people have; I feel as close to several of those people as I do to any of my blood relatives anywhere. I want to stay in Los Angeles!
With my social security income, I'll be able to afford the rent and utiities at the place I've found, and maybe even my transportation and some food. I've registered with several temprary staffing agencies, so I am confident that I will have enough money coming in from one or more of them for my other necessities, and maybe even a movie or restaurant meal now and then.
But, even though the manager of the building into which I plan to move now (on Coronado, just southwest of St. Vincent's Hospital) is making a very generous accomodation on the move-in amount due, I still need at least $1,000 for that move --- for utility deposits, etc. And, just in case there are a few months in which I don't get as much work as I expect to get, I want a "cushion" of another few hundred dollars. That's why I'm asking for $2,000 now.
