Greta Petersen hasn't added a story.
I've tried to see what official help we can offer him through financial aid and scholarships, but I've ended up at dead ends. If he can make it through his first year, more scholarships become available to him, plus he'd have another season of scholarship applications he could try. (The deadlines have already passed for this year.) I'm hoping you could help me pull together the sufficient funding.
I have been in touch with the student, and he's being extremely positive, yet realistic about this. He's worked for so long with the goal of earning his degree here, and he really doesn't want to have to keep putting it off. This student works two jobs - one full-time on his own, and one helping his dad with the family store. He works extremely hard.
He's only going to take one 3-credit course at a time (it's all he an afford), but because of his program's requirements, he has to take an additional 1-credit course that he hadn't counted on. For full-time students, an additional one credit doesn't affect their tuition (for the most part), but for part-time students - especially those paying non-resident tuition - that single credit adds on over $1000. This single credit combined with parking costs (he's commuting from an area that doesn't have bus service that works for him, especially with his work schedule), makes attending school prohibitively expensive. Two things - a single credit and parking - that many of us, and many students, take for granted, are what could prevent this students from making this important step toward his goal of a degree.
This is where my plea comes in. I'm hoping that we could crowdsource the funding for this student, at least for the single credit and possibly parking. He said this would be $1000-2000. George Braden, included on this message, and I have already agreed that we would each put $100 toward the student's fund. This makes us 1/5 of the way. I'm hoping you would consider helping this student and/or letting me know if anyone else you know might want to contribute.
I know this is way outside the box, and as a Midwestern girl, I'm not the kind to ask for money or crowdsource. But I also believe strongly in the education and students and helping them achieve their goals. This student deserves help. I know there are a lot of students who need and deserve help, but this is the one we currently have the opportunity to help. It's about putting that one starfish back into the ocean.
I am asking about this as a member of the public who advocates for education. I am not asking about this from my role as a UW official. I know it's risky, but it's the right thing to do.
Please let me know if you would be interested in donating and helping this students. Tuition is due September 20, and the drop deadline to get 100% tuition back is tomorrow, September 13, at 11:59pm. The student is focused on the September 20 deadline, but it would be wonderful if we could meet the September 13 deadline and save him some additional worry. We can figure out the details of gathering money later. Right now I'm just looking for the promise or commitment to help.
If you prefer not to be part of this or feel too uncomfortable with it, you can ignore this message. I hope you consider helping, though.
The student offered me update in his recent email:
"The first two weeks have been going real well! I am really enjoying being on campus. I'm trying to familiarize myself with all the buildings around this place, I was a bit lost my first week! My work schedule changed a bit, so I had to change my school schedule around as well. I was not able to make it to my [required 1-credit] class last week, I did e-mail the professor regarding my situation but never got a reply. I will be there next week, however! Also, finding parking is a bit of a hassle but other than that everything is going well.
I really hope this last effort will bring a little bit of good news! I really appreciate you trying your very best, I know you have a lot of other things to do as well.
Thank you for all your help."
Thank you,
Greta
