Tony Lucero hasn't added a story.
In 2008, horror film aficionado and mass communications student Tony Lucero had a vision. Inspired by the country's biggest film festivals, he wanted to bring together a community of horror filmmakers and showcase their talents. With help from some of his closest friends from college, an old basement art studio was transformed into an independent theatre for a week in early 2009, and The Late Night Horror Film Festival was born.
That cold week in January 2009 attracted a few hundred local film enthusiasts, artists, and horror film buffs who were eager to screen 9 unreleased films, including 2 features and 7 shorts. Those in attendance, including some of the films' directors, producers, and actors, had a chance to network and discuss each other's work.
2 years later, the LNHFF was held online where audiences screened and voted for their favorite films.
The LNHFF continued to grow. in 2012, Tony Lucero and the Late Night Horror Film Festival presented "Friday Night Fright Flicks" a monthly screening series featuring 2011's Official Selections. This limited engagement was held at Epic Lounge, a performance venue in Downey.
On October 6th, the 2012 Short Film Selections were screened at "HorrorCon", the LNHFF's opening day and horror expo, held at the Norwalk/Whittier Moose Lodge. This event featured a hall full of vendors including a horror film art gallery by Eric Oneill, and custom hearse displays by Graverides Hearse Rentals and Magazine. Attendees were entertained with a horror film video mix show by acclaimed VJ and horror film guru DJ Kos, and live performances by indie rock band Bigamy, as well as House of Zombie, a Rob Zombie tribute band.
The Impact
Over the last few years, we have introduced local audiences to over 40 independent horror films , helping those filmmakers build a following and gain exposure for their work. We were on the brink of cancelling this year's event, however, with growing community support, as well as a partnership with several media outlets, this year's LNHFF is a GO!
Several of the feature length films featured over the past few years have made it into distribution. Horror is often the genre that is overlooked by most traditional film festivals, which is why events like ours are pinnacle to the success of horror filmmakers. The LNHFF is the only Horror Film Festival in the Southeast area of Los Angeles, and with your help, not only can it continue to run, it can continue to grow.
Our Goal
Funding from previous Fests have come from a few local sponsors and submission fees paid by participating filmmakers, however, it has been mostly paid for by our event's founder(who isn't exactly rich). This year's event is taking place at three different venues: Krikorian Premiere Theatres-the local movie theatre, an art gallery, and Epic Lounge-a local performance venue. This means more vendor space, more exhibits, and a separate screening room. We need to raise $10,000 to keep The Late Night Horror Film Festival alive and growing, and with your help, it WILL happen!
Your Financial contributions will fund:
•Venue rental
•Promotional costs including print media, radio ads, posters, and more
•Custom trophies for the award recipients
•Guest Speakers
•Live entertainment(bands, DJ, more)
•Website maintenance
•Event Security
•Audio/Visual equipment rental
•Event insurance/permits
•Meals for our volunteers
•Decorations/Props
•"Swag" bags
We are in contact with several companies who are willing to sponsor the event with giveaways, prizes, and items to include in swag bags for all of our guests.
This year's LNHFF is set to take place from October 2nd-5th, 2013 in Downey,CA
In the event that we don't reach our fundraising goal, the LNHFF will still be held this year. The size of the event does depend on the amount of total contributions we receive. We'll make necessary adjustments if need be.
