Shawntel House hasn't added a story.
When my aunt asked me to write this story I felt honored. Of course I would do anything I could to help the woman I considered a mother. But what do you say to people? How do you get people to understand what someone means to you? For the first time in my life I was at a loss for words.
So here it goes…As some of you know, my aunt who is like my mother was recently diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma (primary), Stage 2B. It is treatable, but this will be a fight. For months she thought she had a torn rotator cuff because the pain in her left shoulder was unbearable. She wanted to wait to go to the doctor until she could get insurance but it just became too unbearable. Imagine finally going to the hospital after weeks of pain thinking you might have a torn rotator cuff and then you are told that it is bone cancer. At the young age of 48, you are diagnosed with a very rare form of bone cancer. I can’t imagine what kind of blow that would be.
After meeting with doctors she was told that the only way to save her life was going to be amputating her left arm. Say what? They are talking about her arm! Her career! Her arm!!! I insisted she get a second opinion from Mayo Hospital or UCLA Medical Center. After a week of asking favors she got into the prestigious UCLA Orthopedic Center to see one of the very few doctors in the country who can do the surgery she needs and possibly save her arm! She was told it was possible to save her arm. I remember the phone call from her after that appointment and for the first time in 3 weeks my aunt seemed hopeful. She told me that she no longer had a pit in her stomach because there is hope! Then the issue of how costly this surgery was going to be came up. How was she going to pay for it? Who can she call for help? What if she couldn’t come up with the down payment? Would that mean she didn’t get the surgery? After all, she is up against the clock to get the surgery done before the cancer spreads to some where else in her body.
What I didn’t say previously is that my aunt is like a mother to me because she has been beside me my entire life and I am forever grateful for her. She inspired me to be the person I am today. She has not judged me and she has always loved me unconditionally! She is an exemplary example of a mother who gave everything of herself for her children and it's that wonderful example that has served me well now that I am a mother myself. I can't thank her enough for having me in her heart as her own daughter. I would move mountains to help my aunt get the best treatment that she can get.
Knowing the battle she is about to go through will be very hard; the LAST thing I want her to worry about is money during this time. The financial situation is that she does not have insurance, and this has left her in an extremely tight situation to obtain the best possible treatment.
Therefore, I would love to raise as much money for her so that she will not have to worry about having to come up with the down payment. Due to not being able to work, her family has lost one entire income.
This is a huge favor I am asking, but if you all have even $5 to donate for this cause, I would be eternally grateful.
I feel very passionate about this cause because my aunt is an amazing, generous, hard-working woman who has always been a phenomenal support; now it is my turn to give back to her. She is so undeserving of this situation, and I know that eliminating financial stress will only help her and her family to get through this awful time.
Much love to you all, and thank you so much for considering this request. My aunt and I are definitely not ones to try and ask for money for personal reasons; however, this is a cause that I firmly believe in, and a situation that is rather serious.
Thank you again, and please email or call me with any questions regarding this matter.
