Megan Shepperd-Haynes hasn't added a story.
Within this 2 weeks he started breathing on his own & slowly fighting his way back to us. At the end of this 2 weeks he was no longer considered in a coma & there was no concrete outcome of how much he would recover from that point. After about 1 month in ICU & about 1 month in the brain injury rehab at the hospital he was released to return home. 49 days in the hospital. In November Leif had surgery to replace the 1/3 of his skull bone that had been missing, which was successful. 2 weeks later I rushed him to the hospital & he was taken into emergency surgery. We discovered that he had gotten staph-MRSA in the skull bone itself & it was spreading, so the bone had to be removed again. Leif is currently waiting to get into an inpatient traumatic brain injury rehab center so he can continue moving forward in his recovery & he is waiting for a new skull bone to be created & is going to undergo his 4th extensive brain surgery in the past 6 months.
Leif has no medical insurance & his medical bills exceed 1 million dollars now due to all of the medical care he has received. Not only are medical bills a huge problem he faces for the future but while he was unable to speak for himself other bills piled up as well such as electricity, credit card, phone bills, etc. The companies billing Leif refused to discontinue charging him although he was incapacitated. By the time Leif was able to speak for himself the bills were much larger than expected. Now Leif has expenses he must pay for such as medication, doctors appointments, etc. Leif & I are both unable to work due to his brain injury leaving him disabled & leaving me as his full time caregiver. We are now in a very tough spot & are having to reach out & ask for help financially.
Leif is 21 now & we have been trying to keep his credit clear & keep him out of debt. He is also trying to get by daily & trying to get the proper treatment & care that he needs. But having no income makes these things difficult. On top of the many struggles Leif faces in the future, we do not want credit or debt to burden him. But we also want him to receive all the correct care & treatment through out his recovery. Due to his traumatic brain injury leaving him disabled & unable to work we are left with no income to do any of these things. So now we must ask for some help!!
