Sabrina Brosnan hasn't added a story.
I'm trying to keep several disabled women from losing their housing during the extreme cold with an oncoming snowstorm about to start. These women, though they have done nowhere wrong but be poor and disabled, are going to lose their safe, warm housing if they cannot get their rent paid up.
The senior disabled woman was walking with a crosswalk light and run down by a truck, breaking her back in 10 places, knocking out all her teeth and causing mental issues. Her adult daughter, who has a chronic illness, cares for her mom and they live in a city owed building. The daughter had her shelter portion from her disability withheld, so she used her savings to keep her and her mom housed. They both have had issues with CRA over the CERB benefits that they didn't apply for and are now having their tax refunds and GST cheques withheld, like many other Canadians who are just trying to rebuild and get by, since Covid and in this economy.
Due to these issues, they are behind on the rent. The management company is understanding and they want these women to stay, cus they're quiet, don't smoke or cause damage, but since the city, which road a new Mayor and council in on the promise to keep seniors, disabled and poor people in their housing and to build new housing, would rather throw these women out, when a snowstorm is about to start.
These women owe about 3 months rent, however, if it were paid up would mean that they have a safe, warm, comfortable, well kept place to stay throughout the winter and mean that they stay in their rent controlled unit. In the current market, they wouldn't be able to afford any unit to rent as the rentals are $400-900 more than their current rental. Added to this, the women have a cat, which is family to them that they will not give up. Most all rentals now do not allow pets or if they do, the rental is more money and requires another deposit for the pet. Their current rental allows pets and is understanding that a pet is family too.
These women have tried to get help from elected officials, charities, rent banks, community groups and loan companies, but to no avail. The elected officals say they'll do something when holidays are over, the rent banks say that they can't help right now, loan companies won't provide help due to their poor credit, like a lot of poor people thry have bad credit due to no jobs or life emergencies that caused bad things to happen and community groups say the best they can do, is take the women to a shelter, which isn't a secure housing situation like what the women are currently in.
Being able to provide funds to cover the back rent amount, which includes the upcoming rent for December, would mean these women have a safe, warm, healthy, stable place to live for not just the winter, but for the future.
Your help would provide the best Chrsitmas present of all; a home!! You would be making a life altering gift in the form of not only a secure home base, but also the reduction in stress that not having a home can cause.
These women have volunteered to help their friends, neighbors, community and charities in the past, up until a few months ago they regularly worked cleaning greenspaces, waterways, they have worked with housing projects and cancer resources as well. Now unfortunately, all their kindness cannot or will not be returned to them in their time of need.
This Giving Tuesday, think about the life altering ability you have to keep someone safe and housed, even in this economy, a few dollars and become the gift of life for those who are just trying to stay out of the winter cold. This year, let someone know that you have given your share in loving kindness, an outstretched hand of caring and the true gift of hope, by providing a roof over the head of a disabled or senior person's head.
