Lorraine McGrath hasn't added a story.
Upon the family's arrival in Canada, Ian tried to sponsor his Egyptian wife, who arrived on a visitor's visa, for landed immigrant status. However, immigration officials erroneously informed him that he did not meet the financial threshold necessary to sponsor a family member for the purpose of family reunification. Instead, immigration officials processed Wafaa as a refugee.
Despite having committed no crime, on January 14, 2013, during a routine visit to the Mississauga Immigration Centre, Wafaa was arrested, placed in detention, and scheduled for immediate deportation. There she was interrogated several times without the benefit of a lawyer, stripped on several occasions to her undergarments, had her head-scarf removed, and was photographed at many angles. Her personal mail from well-wishers and supporters was withheld by guards, a federal crime. Despite the help of MP David Christopherson (Hamilton Centre), the Hamilton District Labour Council, and many members of the community, Wafaa was deported as scheduled on April 27, 2013.
The Reunite Wilkie Family Committee fundraises to support the material needs and the incurred/anticipated costs of a legal defence to reunite Wafaa with her family in Canada.
Thank you for your support,
Reunite Wilkie Family Committee
