Thank you for your interest in being an Advocate in the Junior League of Rockford’s 2018 Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI)! Get ready for an impactful week filled with meaningful conversations and learning about hidden poverty in our community.

The Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) is an advocacy campaign that seeks to raise community awareness of the issue of poverty in Rockford. During the week of April 23, 2018 through April 27, 2018, LBDI Advocates  wear the same little black dress for five (5) consecutive days to illustrate the effects poverty can have on a woman’s access to resources, her confidence and her professional opportunities. The dress or black suit is a visual representation of the lack of choice for families living in poverty.

All funds raised during the LBDI week will go towards the Junior League of Rockford’s mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Our goal is for each Advocate to raise $250 or more, for a total of about $13,500.

Did you know that 43,858 people in Winnebago County are living in poverty, or 15.6% of the population? To break this down even further more than 40.3%, (or 4,836 families) of single mother families with children under the age of 18 are living in poverty. The annual income for a one-parent family with 2 children is $59,706 to make ends meet, yet these families fall short $10,449 annually.  We are working together to help families get out of poverty through education!
