We provide job training in sewing-related skills for marginalized populations within the Kansas City urban core. Our curriculum provides training in garment construction, industrial applications, artisan / crafts and entrepreneurial contract sewing.

We are passionate about helping women find a path out of addiction and generational poverty.  Research shows that over 2/3 of women from these marginalized populations will return to their former lifestyle within 3 years if they do not have job skills.

Ten years ago we founded a for-profit sewing business that now employs 22 women.  There is a growing demand for skilled seamstresses in the Kansas City area.  In partnership with other businesses, non profits, and individuals, we are opening a training center known as "The Sewing Labs".

The Sewing Labs is a non-profit learning center dedicated to teaching job skills to women in KC's marginalized communities of the urban core.

Your tax-deductible donation will go to buildout and launch expenses, and provide initial training materials.  We are looking for one-time and re-ocurring financial gifts at any and all levels.  Your gift will go toward these start-up expenses.

  • $500 - irons and pressing equipment
  • $500 - commercial serger
  • $1,000 - 3 home sergers
  • $1,200 - 3 commercial sewing machines
  • $3,000 - 12 identical home sewing machines
  • $2,500 - computer, printer, office equipment
  • $2,500 - lighting and electrical buildout of the building
  • $3,000 - floor repair and finishing
  • $3,600 - windows and doors

We have a talented group of teachers who are volunteering right now - and eventually we will also need to hire a part time coordinator and office / volunteer management staff.

We are SO EXCITED to kick this off!  We are also open to gift-in-kind donations of new or gently used equipment that is on our list.

We know there is a demand for skilled seamstresses.  We know there is a need and a lot of interest by urban residents to get this training.  Please help us make it happen!  Together we can bring hope to this corner of Kansas City!
