Stacy Nelson hasn't added a story.
This site is meant to share Bill's story, his discovery of pancreatic cancer at the age of 53, and raise funds to help cover medical expenses for his chemotherapy and surgery. We are asked often by friends and co-workers on ways to help and spreading the work of this campaign is a great way to do that.
The official date we learned of Bill's pancreatic cancer was November 28, 2014. He had spent Thanksgiving in the hospital and the day after our world came tumbling down. We went home and the next several days are a blur of disbelief and constant asking of questions of "why"? Anyone who has gone through this knows that there are no answers to that question.
Soon we embarked on the journey of oncology and surgery. We met with an oncologist and began chemo on December 15. That is an experience no one should have to go through. The staff and care provided is from amazing individuals who do their jobs very well and with great concern for the well-being of their patients. Each chemo session lasts 5+ hours. He goes home with more of a slow-release pump full of chemo drugs for another 46 hours, once the pump is disconnected, 24 hours later he receives a shot that is designed to boost his white cell count.
Surgery was March 3rd. Nearly 10 hours in the OR and the surgeon was very pleased with how it went. All of the cancer waste removed and all of the lymph nodes that were tested wee clear. Officially cancer free but now there is after care or preventive treatment. More chemotherapy is in store but it is a less intense type vs. the industrial strength of the first rounds. Four months of that and then continued checkups and scans.
If you can imagine that he still manages to work as much as he can, we both do. His focus needs to be on his health, not worrying about medical expenses. Insurance covers some of the expenses, this is what is called 'catastrophic care' - insurance jargon I guess - and there is much more that they do not cover. Our friends and family have helped with their love, support, and encouragement. That is so important on this journey.
Love and thanks to all who read this story and to those who contribute.
