The beginning of the year I was very sick and put in the hospital with H1N1 and pneumonia and on a ventilator for a week. Needless to say being that sick brought on another battle that I had no idea my body was fighting. I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Stenosis and was told that I could get by for 10-20 years without heart surgery. I was hesitant at first to do that, but I had 3 Dr's telling me that surgery could be put off for awhile.
Since being discharged from the hospital in Feb, I have been to the ER on several occassions due to difficulty breathing and severe chest pains. The beginning of May I was contacted by the new Heart Surgeon for Salina. I was hesitant about meeting with him as I didn't know what he would tell me. I was bound and determined to put my foot down and tell him that I couldn't wait 10-20 years for surgery. Upon meeting the surgeon I quickly found out that he was on my side of things. He told me that I had been to the ER twice since being released from the hospital and all I was doing was putting my life on hold. He told me that he wanted to go over one of my tests that I had done in the hospital and that he would call me back the next day. I waited anxiously for his phone call, but it never came. I was about to give up. I called his office and left a message for someone to please call me back and let me know what was going on. A few days after I left a message his nurse practioner called me and informed me that he was out of town trying to get things in order to get moved here and that he didn't forget about me and that I was first on his list to call when he returned. Made me feel somewhat better after that.
Saturday May 24th I ended up leaving work early and had a friend take me to the ER as I was having chest pains that hurt worse than before. Nothing that they could really do for me as I wasn't having a heart attack or anything like that. Told me to go home, take a few days off work and relax. Very hard to do when I can be relaxing and still have some bad chest pains and shortness of breath. Wednesday May 28, I ended back up at the ER with the same symptoms only to be treated poorly. I was so discouraged about the way I was treated I was beginning to think that no one wanted to help me.
I went to work Thursday May 29th feeling numb and very hurt as I didn't know what to do. I had a plan informing my PCP about the way I was treated at the ER during my upcoming appt. June 3rd. Little did I know that I was to receive a phone call from the heart surgeon that day. I was so nervous when I listened to the message that he left for me asking me to call him back as soon as I could. I immediately called him back. His nurse practioner answered by the 3rd ring. After informing her who was calling she asked me how I've been, all I could tell her was not so good. She then told me that things will get better and to just hang in there (little did I know, she knew what I was about to hear). The Dr got on the phone and said, "so I hear you've been to the ER twice in a matter of days?" I replied, yes unfortunately I have. He said, how would you like to schedule your heart surgery for the 1st week of June? I was speechless, I didn't know what to say. I couldn't believe it, I was hearing something that I wanted to hear from this Dr. I was afraid he was going to tell me that I could wait for the surgery like the others have told me. I have the surgery scheduled for the the 24th of June.
Upon scheduling the surgery, I got to thinking, how am I going to pay my bills for when I am off work recuperating from major surgery. A friend told me to try FundRazr. I have stressed over how bills would get paid before when I was in between jobs and such, but I have always been able to meet the deadlines before I received disconnect notices. I have never been in a situation to where I was going to be off work for up to 3 months possibly of not working due to a health reason. I will need help with utilities, food and medications for up to about 3 months give or take. Every little bit will help out tremendously. This is hard for me to do as I am the one that goes out of her way to help others and never ask for anything in return. So I am asking even if it's a little, every little bit helps, will you help me while I am recovering from major open heart surgery?
