Cynthia White hasn't added a story.
Buddy is a puppy I found while on my morning walk along the railroad line. I heard a yelping and found him tucked against one of the metal rails. At first I thought he was a rodent but then I saw his adorable face with big, pleading puppy eyes. When I bent down to pick him up I noticed that his legs were splayed out and his back and rearend were covered with blood. He also smelled very badly. Obviously, I knew there was something very wrong. I took off my sweatshirt and scooped him inside, he was crying and yelping the whole time.
I wrapped him as well as I could and carried him back home. Since I don't drive, I ran over to my neighbor and we drove Buddy to the next town over to the nearest vet and animal hospital. It was hard to watch as they examined him and he was yelping and crying. They cleaned all of the blood off and shaved his back where there was a huge open wound. They probed inside the wound with a pair of forceps and gauze to clean it out while I help his head. He was shaking, so scared and in pain and yelping the whole time. It broke my heart to hear it. Then they took him away to do x-rays. When they came back in they said that he had a fracture in his leg and that it would require surgery for him to fix it, saying they need to put a pin in the bone. I asked about a cast, since I'm on a fixed income, and they said because of the location of the break near the hip, that it wouldn't heal properly and that he wouldn't ever walk with that leg with a cast. Right now, whenever he tries to stand, he cries out and his legs flop out sideways, and he is not strong enough to pull himself with his front legs.
I was able to have the vet bill me for the visit, which came to $464. They gave me a quote for the leg surgery, which is another $1300, and said I can do the rehab at home. Unfortunately, I am on a fixed income, retired, and cannot afford this extra expense. I will not let them put him to sleep at the shelter and I will keep and take care of him. He is such a little angel and will be good company since my husband passed last year. I've always wanted to adopt a puppy but kept putting it off. This is a sign that it is time.
I started this fundraiser because I need help in paying for these medical bills. Buddy will not be able to get the surgery until I pay for it up front. If the bone begins to heal, then they will re-break it to put in the pin and plate. I have removed everything that is an extra expense in my life (including my morning coffee) to help save up for the surgery. If you are able to help in any way, however small, please do so. Thank you so much for your help and support for Buddy, my little sweetheart.
