Kayla Tokarczyk hasn't added a story.
On Wednesday, May 21st John was heading North bound on Meade street
in front of Appleton Medical Center. A 94-year old woman heading South
bound, turning left onto Glendale did not see him and turned in front
of him.
The accident left John in critical condition with severe head
injuries. After being evaluated at AMC he was flown to ThedaClark in
Neenah and admitted into the emergency room. John was placed on life
support - not because he could not breathe on his own but because it
was important his body didn't need to work any harder than it already
was. The nurses and doctors wanted to have control of his vitals in
order to alleviate strain from his brain.
He is currently in the ICU in ThedaClark. After further
evaluating the continuous swelling in his John's brain, Thursday, May
22nd the neurosurgeon decided it was best to place an ICP
(intercranial pressure) monitor into his right center region of his
skull. The monitor was placed at 9am, two hours later the neurosurgeon
concluded it was time to resort to surgery. Dr. Bhattacharjee
performed a craniectomy around 1 o'clock Friday afternoon.
The craniectomy is a surgical operation where they removed a
bone flap from John's skull to allow for more swelling. The surgery
went very well with no complications. His bone flap is being stored
very safely for replacement when he is ready. He also has a right
pelvis fracture the orthopedic will address once his brain injury is stable.
Now................... we wait.
Brain swelling takes anywhere from 3-7 days to peak. Once the
swelling begins to subside the doctors will be able to better evaluate
John's recovery and prognosis. During that time only immediate family
is able to visit him in the ICU. We are not allowed to talk to him or
touch him to prevent disturbing him. At this time, It is crucial he
rests his brain. The family has placed a thoughts and messages book in
the waiting room of the ICU. You can find this waiting room by taking
the north elevators to 2R. If you visit our family, please be sure to
sign his book we will share this with him throughout his recovery.
John will need to be hospitalized for weeks, maybe in even months. Keep the prayers coming! John needs every one of them! We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.
