Music City Mutts hasn't added a story.
About 2 weeks ago, we received a call about a litter of puppies that needed to be rescued in Alabama. From our understanding, a man was trying to dump them in a trash pile, and a farmer happened to see him and asked if he could take the puppies instead. He originally thought he would be able to take them to a shelter but all of them were full, so the puppies were being kept outside.
Not knowing much about the health of the pups, other than 2 of them were blind, we were able to work with a group and transport them up to Nashville. When the pup arrived, it was evident they were in much worse shape than we had originally thought. Malnutrition has caused them to be all different sizes. The smallest, Gretchen, was only about 4lbs while the largest, Olivia, was about 17 lbs. The babes were covered in fleas and full of worms. 4 girls and 1 boy, we named them Gretchen, Olivia, Susan, Alice and Jerry.
Susan and Olivia are both blind but Susan has a bit more wrong with her little body. Upon picking her up, she “swims” and her head is constantly wobbling like a newborn baby. The vet said she has a condition that caused her optic nerves to cross, so she’s basically blind and dizzy all the time. We aren’t sure why Olivia is blind but she doesn’t seem to be dizzy or move her head like her sister. All of the pups have a bone condition, brought on by extreme malnutrition, that has caused their front legs to slightly face outward. This shouldn’t affect them too much because they’re eating properly now and will never know what starving is for the rest of their lives.
Now we have to talk about Jerry. This sweet little guy is the quietest of the group. Poor pup, he’s the only boy with 4 sisters. When he went home with his foster dad, he just sat up quietly in the front seat like a little human. He was ready for some peace and quiet. Jerry has the sweetest disposition and also happens to have the worst medical issue of all the babes ☹ We found out Jerry has a double heart murmur. We will be doing an Echocardiogram to find out just how bad it is. Initially, the vet asked if we’d like to euthanize him because adopting him out might not be very easy. Of course that wasn’t an option in our eyes. We should have some more answers as to what the next step with him will be, after the echocardiogram.
If you’d like to donate to the Alabama 5, every penny will help! You can send Paypal to musiccitymutts@gmail.com or donate to the fundrazr. We have been able to rescue more dogs than we thought would ever be possible because of funds generated by Mama Jade. We obviously haven’t used up all of those funds quite yet, but in order to continue to take on more dogs, every fundraiser helps. Just to give you a general idea of where the money is going, the first visit for the pups all together came in at $1,003. This included their first shots, fecal swabs and floats, dewormer, Trifexis, Capstar (for fleas) and the general check up. Jerry’s Echocardiogram is going to be $350. (We have also been able to spay/neuter and fully vet around 20+ dogs because of the money generously donated to the Mama Jade fund) If you’re interested in adopting one of the Alabama 5, please contact us via Music City Mutts facebook page or by filling out an adoption application on our website. From all of us, thank you SO much! We couldn’t do what we do without y’all. - Christianna and Cara of Music City Mutts
