Taneisha Tiger hasn't added a story.
I will be volunteeing as a Midwife in a hospital in Ghana. Here I will be working in the maternity unit, teaching midwives about how we care for pregnant women throughout the antenatal periods, during labour, birth and postnatally after birth in the UK to ensure a positive prognosis for the mothers and babies in Ghana. I will be looking at ways for them to improve detection of deviation from normal. This will enable them to know when to intervene with additional help and how to deal with the most common obstetric emergency to save lives.
Currently, Ghana Accra is faced with an unacceptable maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity rates. "records from health institution record that still born rate as 3.5% per 1000 births" where as in the UK there is 0.5% per 1000 births. These death rates are due to poor management of care during the pre-natally and labour process which can be prevented. Midwives lack knowledge and expertise when dealing with clinical emergency procedures, which can be improved by sharing my knowledge and experience. Additionally pregnant women are unaware of when they should seek medical care. Therefore by educating Ghanian Midwives this should help the community to gain a better understanding of the importance of attending hospital when there is a problem. The project will benefit the hospital and community in Ghana as it aim to address the issues mentioned above and improve the Maternity Service.
This project will be an inspiring and immensely fulfilling as I will be working in a different country. Learning how to build and develop new relationships. This will also help to develop my communication skills. I will develop my problem solving skills by overcoming challenging barriers that i may face whiles volunteering. It will be interesting, however challenging to learn and understand the different type of cultures and behaviours to determing weather these factors impacts staff and the care delivered to mothers and newborn babies. Most importantly, I will be working in an environment with limited medical resources and will be expected to deliver a high standard of teaching and health care.
I believe that this project will help introduce me to new career pathways. Working in a new environment helps to develop teamworking, communication skills, problem solving, project planning, task management and organisational skills. Working in Ghana will help me learn about sustainability in the maternity service and how these skills can be transferred into the NHS environment.
