Jodi Roberts hasn't added a story.
My name is Jodi Roberts. I am the founder and treasurer of Ridin’ 4 A Cure, Inc. Cancer affects so many across the world and our family is no different. Ridin’ 4 a Cure was inspired by breast cancer and Mary Emery Weidling (1945-2012).
On December 6, 2005, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Statistics indicated that she had about 5-9 months before the disease would take over her body and win the war. The treatment was intense. She began daily radiation treatments at UW-Madison, 140 miles round trip from her home. We were told about a local organization in Lyndon Station that provided patient assistance might be able to help with the daily travel expenses. Mom requested assistance from Friends and Family Cancer Foundation. The foundation granted mom’s request and provided at $300 gas card.
The generosity shown by Friends and Family inspired me to create Ridin’ 4 A Cure and pay it forward. In case you haven’t heard the phrase, PAY IT FORWARD allow me explain its meaning…to Pay it Forward means to do a favor or something kind for another person without the expectation of being paid back…instead one asks the recipient to do the same for someone else...and so on... The concept became popular with the 2000 release of a movie with the same title….starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt.
In the fall of 2008, I decided to “build” my cancer bike with my husband; Matt’s help….My idea was to use the cancer bike to raise funds for cancer patient assistance organizations across the state of WI…I took my idea a step further and founded Ridin’ 4 A Cure, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer patient assistance organizations across Wisconsin.
Our 1st Annual Ridin’ 4 A Cure Cancer Fundraiser was held on September 5, 2009. 36 motorcycles and 48 riders participated; raising $551 for Friends and Family Cancer Foundation. Mom rode with her family and friends and together we paid it forward.
Mom’s cancer continued to progress and in May of 2010 Mom’s leg splintered. She underwent surgery at UW-Madison to repair the broken bones. As Mom was going through rehab in a nursing home the rest of us were scrambling to get the house ready for her homecoming…Mom was not able to walk and would need a wheelchair ramp to get in the house. We applied for assistance through Friends and Family Cancer foundation. They responded with a $500 Home Depot gift card to purchase the lumber needed to build the ramp. With the help of “our friends and family” the wheelchair ramp was built and mom returned home.
The generosity of Friends and Family inspired this family once again. My brother, Jim and his wife, Barb joined Ridin’ 4 A Cure and together we began to promote our next event.
Our 2nd Annual Ridin’ 4 A Cure Cancer Fundraiser was held on September 4, 2010. 64 motorcycles and 89 riders participated; raising $3305 for Friends and Family Cancer Foundation. Due to treatment complications mom was not able to join us on the 2nd ride; however we know she was with us in spirit.
The pay it forward inspiration continued…Dennis and Wendy Witt from North Freedom rode in our second ride. Dennis shared with me his idea to promote this following years’ ride. He would put the ride date and website on his demolition car. The car appeared in Reedsburg’s Butter Fest…mom was present to watch as Dennis promoted the ride and reached more people than we could have ever imagined. The car did not win the feature…but as mom said…”It’s like cancer, not everyone survives…but he put up a GREAT FIGHT!” Since that time Crashin’ 4A Cure has unveiled 5 demolition cars all promoting the ride.
Our 3rd Annual Ridin’ 4 A Cure Cancer Fundraiser was held on September 3, 2011. 80 motorcycles, 7 vehicles and more than 150 riders/drivers participated; raising $4250. Funds were divided between 3 area organizations all providing cancer patient assistance. Mom spoke at this ride. She knew it would be her last and she wanted to express her gratitude to everyone for their efforts. Mom made it very clear that the ride was to continue after she was gone and that she would always be looking down upon us with great pride. You can view a video of mom speaking at the following link: http://youtu.be/80SKPR6daRo
On January 4, 2012, mom won her battle with cancer…when she made her final trip home.
Our 4th Annual Ridin’ 4 A Cure Cancer Fundraiser was held on September 1, 2012. 68 motorcycles, 3 vehicles and more than 100 riders/drivers participated; raising more than $3000. Funds were divided between 4 organizations across the state. Mom was definitely with us in spirit; it was a beautiful day with the sun shining and a blue sky.
Our 5th Annual Ridin’ 4 A Cure Cancer Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013. Our goal this year is to donate more than $10,000 to area cancer patient organizations.
We hope that you will join our efforts and help us reach our goal with a donation of any size. The Pay It Forward phenomenon is very magical….and can spread across an entire state within days if each of us commit to helping at least 3 people…and those 3 people each commit to helping 3 more, you can easily see how quickly thousands can be involved and pay it forward.
To learn more about Ridin’ 4 A Cure please visit our website at www.ridin4acure.com. Enclosed you will find our donation request letter, our organization brochure and our upcoming event flyer.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration of a contribution so that cancer patients receive the direct patient assistance they so desperately need.
Sincerely,
Jodi L Roberts
