What's happening:
On February 1, 2021 in Myanmar, military seized power and arrested National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi , President Win Myint, and hundreds of elected officials who won in a landslide victory in November 2020 elections. Military General Min Aung Hlaing has delcared himself as the head of state. The UN and countries around the world has condemned the coup.
Millions of Burmese took to the streets to protest the military coup and calling to free those arrested. Violence against peaceful protestors have been escalating on daily basis. Police and military used water tanks, teargas, rubber bullets and real bullets, including sniper guns with muiple casualties, including intentional gunshot wounds to the heads of a 19 year old girl hiding behind bus stop and a 16 year old boy helping injured protestor.
Myanmar has a bloody history under military coup in 1962 and in 1988. People have learned that civil disobedience is the key to stop the wheels of the government. Government employees have answered to the call, and are now paying the price of being forced out from the government housings and being arrested at night times. Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) was started by doctors and heads of many hospitals have been detained.
Currently, police, military and unidentified individuals are detaining the citizens at night. General Min Aung Hlaing released 23000 convicted criminals on Feb 12, causing chaos -- same strategy used in 1988 coup which brought fear, confusion, and violence to the streets.
You can hear the pots and pans banging every night at 8PM to drive away the "evil spirits" of the military regime. While many are determined and committed for return of their elected government, others feel angry but helpless.
Why the fundraising:
You and I can help people to continue CDM by supporting the employees who were forced from their homes and are without basic salary. Most live from pay check to pay check. Average monthly income in Myanmar is $396, with minimum wage of $3.86 per day. In addition, people below poverty line need basic supplies. Citizens are vowed to help each other, but they need help from external sources. A little will go a long way.
How the funds will be used:
Funds will be transferred to the organizations helping citizens providing food, shelter, safety and medical treatments to those affected. The funds will be distributed in multiple payments, offering sustained movement and ensuring effctiveness. Only organizations or groups who are taking effective and efficient actions will be funded. If by will of the people, and the state of the country should change, the funds will be used to meet basic needs of those under poverty line and for combating COVID-19 in Myanmar. Organizations vetted so far are: We Support Heroes and 21 Savage MM. Transparency note: there is currently an issue in transferring funds to Myanmar and various avenues will be used to deliver the funds. You will receive updates on donation uses as the funds are disbursed.
