WHO I AM
Hi! You probably all know me, your friendly neighborhood visual
artist, Jonathan. I've come a very long way from making simple
paintings in my kitchen nine years ago to living as a multimedia, 2-D,
installation, and light artist in New York City. You can see a bunch
of what I've done and learn more about my conceptual impetus by
checking out my website at chromadetic.com or my Instagram.
WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO
This has, hands down, been my most accomplished year as an artist-- most of which has been due to my single-minded focus on making art! This year, I have:
- Completed a residency at the SVA Visible Futures Lab, mastered lasercutting and put on a full exhibition
- Installed my first major work at a university at the Lehman College Art Gallery
- Curated my first major art exhibition: The New Non, New Narratives in Nonrepresentational Art & Abstraction
- Animated and Directed my first short film
- Started a viral subway campaign
- Participated the ChaNorth artist residency in Pine Plains
- Joined Flux Factory for a major museum residency at the Aros Art Museum in Aarhus, Denmark
- Plus one more super big announcement to come next month!
WHAT I'M PLANNING
Since last winter, I have undertaken new materials and a very new direction in my practice: the use of transparency, refraction, and reflection to manipulate light. Using my experiments and completed analog lamps, I continued my experiments altering light and projections and landed this residency in Iceland at Listhus. This program, Moving Lights, is devoted completely to artists working in light.
It will be a chance for me to really dedicate my time and energy to considering materials and concepts. I will continue using lenses and reflective materials, and using the night sky and (hopefully) the Aurora Borealis as inspiration for next steps and future projects.
WHAT I NEED
Although this year has been an unparalleled success for my art, surviving as an artist in New York means both keeping a job and spending all my other time devoted to research, design, construction, and marketing my artwork. This residency is actually very affordable, but taking six weeks off from my day job, on top of the other time I spent making work this year, means a lot of rent money I'm not earning. I am asking for help covering some of the costs of the residency to help me continue making work.
▶ Total cost for this residency:
- $1035: Residency Fee (900 Euro)
- $520: Airflight to Reykjavik and Transport to Ólafsfjörður
- $800: Food
- $400+: Incidental costs
- TOTAL: $2755+
HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you want to help, you can buy some of my art! I have put together a collection of affordable items that you can get in return for your patronage. I tried hard to think of things that would capture this moment in my art practice that would also be items that people might actually want to have and hold. Art objects shouldn't have to cost a lot to be meaningful and valuable.
If you want to make a direct contribution, or if you want to add additional funds to any of these perks, you are also free to do so, and it would be extremely appreciated!
▶ PERKS
SPREADING THE WORD
I understand that not everyone can contribute financially, so
please help me get the word out and share this with your friends and family.
I appreciate you all so much, and I'm looking forward to what
lies ahead! I really couldn't keep doing this without all the
amazing support I have had over these many years.
hearts and love and gratitude,
