The London Chapter of Spelling Bee of Canada hosts its London Regional Spelling Bee on April 9, 2016. We have lost our major sponsor who historically provided 40 to 50% of our yearly funding. We urgently need your help to cover the shortfall.

Who Are We

Spelling Bee of Canada (SBOC) is an educational organization that encourages youth, parents, teachers and the community at large to participate in the education process and celebrate academic achievement. We host yearly spelling bees primarily in Ontario and our new chapters in B.C. and Saskatchewan.

Spelling Bee of Canada's Official Website

We held the first London Regional Spelling Bee in 2005. Like most SBOC chapters, the London Chapter is headed by a Chapter President, Ms. Dirka Prout who is supported by a five-member planning committee. We serve the City of London and surrounding areas including St. Thomas, Thamesville, Sarnia, and Woodstock. We accept registrations from children aged 6 to 14 attending public and private schools and those that are homeschooled. The children participate in three categories:

  • Primary - ages 6 to 8
  • Junior - ages 9 to 11
  • Intermediate - ages 12 to 14

In keeping with the original meaning of a bee, we involve the community at large to provide children with a challenging outlet for their love of words. Our 'bee-keepers' include:

  • local businesses such as Scholars Choice, 3M and Fleetway;
  • organizations such as the London Children's Museum, Toastmasters and London and District Labour Council; and
  • individuals including parents, retirees, teachers and youth aged 15+.

The London Chapter is self-funded and 100% run by volunteers, most of whom work full time. Our parent organization is a federally registered charity but runs in a similar manner. Keep up with the London Chapter and like us on Facebook:

Our Cause

In preparing for the bee, the children are provided with a 400- word manual, coaching and pronunciation apps and access to optional coaching sessions. We support literacy in youth by providing them with an extracirricular activity that directly expands their vocabulary and self-confidence. The skills needed to acquire new words are transferable to other areas of study.  We consider every child that participates as a winner. Why? Because studies have shown that vocabulary growth is important for a child's development.

How will my donation be used?

We distribute prize monies and trophies to the top three finishers in each category. The 9 trophies cost about $200. The cash prizes are distributed as follows:

  • 1st place - $200, Primary; $300, Junior, $400 Intermediate
  • 2nd place - $150, Primary; $175, Junior, $200 Intermediate
  • 3rd place - $100, Primary; $125, Junior, $150 Intermediate

Booking the auditorium for hosting our March 5, 2016 Practice Bee and April 9, 2016 competition bee costs about $700. We also provide lunch and/or snacks for some 20 to 30 volunteers who spend most or all of the 10-hour days with us. Food expenditures including purchase of items for our on-site fundraising concession stand amount to approximately $300.

We are quite responsible and efficient with the funds raised. With the exception of 2008 when we encountered a major funding shortfall directly linked to the global financial crisis we typically have a small surplus/deficiit (less than $250) or break-even.

Please help

The recent downturn in the markets have affected our former major sponsor. This may be affecting other potential sponsors since we have seen a decrease in larger donations. We need help to cover a $3,000 shortfall in our budget. Any amount will help us reach our goal of covering all expenses.
