Agricultural Training for Sustainable Living

We provide American veterans instruction in regenerative agriculture practices and a potential path to gain pride, education and fulfillment as well as permanent source of sustainable income, community and a sense of contribution. VHP ensures a path for veterans which not only supports reintegration to civilian life but also leads to a sustainable future of food.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates that every fourth homeless person is a combat veteran. In fact, many of them received military decorations for their bravery and heroism. For combat veterans, it isn't always easy to transition back to civilian life. Trauma related to war and combat leads to post-traumatic stress, depression and hopelessness. We owe a great deal to the soldiers who have sacrificed so much for us. We believe that veterans possess the unique skills and character needed to strengthen rural communities and create sustainable food systems for all. We believe that homestead food production creates purpose, opportunity, as well as physical and psychological benefits.

VHP offers participants hands-on experience, skill training, one-on-one assistance in assessing needs of self-sustainability, professional support to reduce risks of homestead farm business development in areas of production, marketing and management. The ultimate goal of our program is to support the development of viable business models that provide lifelong income production for combat veterans and a fellowship program providing vocational assistance, job development, placement, and ongoing supports to improve employment outcomes among combat veterans and veterans at-risk of homelessness. VHP wishes to create a scholarship fund, which is available for those in need to cover training fees, food, housing and travel costs. The participants are given access to resources and support services that enable them to reintegrate into society. VHP intends to grow combat veterans' passion in agriculture into a successful self-sustainable model while becoming a peer mentor for the farmer veteran community. VHP Fellowship Awards create opportunity for combat and disabled veterans to work full-time on farms. Training staff at our project location puts veterans through training in sustainable agriculture. Veterans learn procedural, business and cultivation skills... skills they can use to market themselves for future jobs in agriculture. Connecting with the soil, animals and plants helps healing, grounding and re-building of self respect. VHP staff, additionally, offers Compassionate Communication skill training to actively support combat veterans in family functioning; to reduce social alienation and isolation; to support workplace functioning; to prevent alcohol/substance misuse; to foster PTSD symptom reduction or other psychological problems interfering with quality of life.

VHP participants will leave the training with a strong foundation in the basic principles of operating a sustainable homestead farming enterprise, they will support the development of viable business models that provide lifelong income production as well as commit to train others veterans, This program benefits from camaraderie network for sharing experiences, disseminating resources, and identifying collaborations. The operation of homestead type agriculture production with team work, empowers veterans self healing process. Training combat veterans in homestead agriculture operations management, field and post-harvest product safety, and production practicum will allow them to consider self-employment. By creating sound farm businesses, returning veterans can reintegrate into communities.
