It is with great pleasure and respect that the Board of the Dead Man's Ridge Walk announces that Wayne DeHaven, Sr. will be this year's honoree as the returning veteran of the 17th Airborne Division.

Wayne H. DeHaven (Sr.), born in 1923, served in Fox Company, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division during WWII.

After volunteering for the paratroopers he trained at Camp Mackall and Camp Forrest (1943-1944). Having completed 175 hours of training to be a specialized radio-operator, he became the personal radioman (rank Tec5) of Captain Reynolds, Commanding Officer of the company, and joined the Company Headquarters.

DeHaven was sent by sea to England in mid-August 1944, then on to Mourmelon, France by air on December 24, 1944. The day after, he took position at Stenay along the Meuse River to prevent any further German penetrations into the Allied lines. Wayne entered "Battle of the Bulge" on January 3, 1945 when his unit took position west of Bastogne, in Monty and Mande-Saint-Etienne, Belgium.

The first clash of the 513PIR happened one day later against a fierce and severe German armored resistance. Casualties were high, forcing the company to withdraw into the woods south of the location. After reorganization, on January 7 the next move was to take the high grounds and open fields south of Flamierge, a place soon to become the "Dead Man's Ridge". Progression was good, but the men fell under heavy German artillery and tank shelling. Wayne's portable radio was destroyed by shell splinters (shrapnel), as was his helmet. Suffering head wounds, he was evacuated to the rear line and was never involved in combat again before the end of the war.

Wayne DeHaven is honored as the 17th Airborne Veteran guest of the 8th annual "Dead Man's Ridge Walk" (March 20th, 2016 at Compogne, Belgium). All the expenses of his remembrance trip to Belgium will be paid with the funds raised from the Walk registration, DMRW Charity Dinner, and special fund-raising efforts like this. You can show your support and appreciation to Wayne for his Service through your donation that will be used specifically to fund his trip. We thank you kindly in advance for your gesture, your good spirit and your support !

-----------------
