My name is Purnama, and I am a singer-songwriter, ceremonialist, and cultural bridge, living in my hometown of Bedulu, Bali.

My path of music and ceremony began in 2018. I have witnessed countless times the power of music, and seen the way songs carry us home to our bodies, to our breath, to the earth beneath our feet, and how melody can heal what words alone cannot reach.

Yet, in the spiritual and medicine music scene of Bali - the Island of the Gods, where offerings are made every day and everything begins with prayer - there are so few medicine songs sung in the languages of the land.

Most songs in ceremonial spaces are in English, Spanish, or Sanskrit, while the voices of Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Bali remain quiet, almost forgotten. I am on a mission to change that, one song at a time. 🌺

THE INTENTION OF THIS ALBUM

My intention is to create accessible, simple, and uplifting medicine songs in Balinese and Indonesian - songs that people from around the world can learn, remember, and share as a prayer for these lands & their lives.

These are songs that honor Bali, the guardians of this island, and our beautiful Mother Earth.

At the moment, there is an immense gap to be witnessed between foreigners & locals in Bali.
Many arrive seeking healing, beauty, and transformation - yet the land and its culture are often taken for granted, consumed more than truly met. When we forget the language of a place, its prayers, and its traditions, we slowly lose relationship with it.

Music can help us remember & build bridges.

When we learn the local language through song, when we sing prayers that are familiar to the land beneath our feet and its guardians, something shifts. We move from unconscious consumption to conscious presence. From taking inspiration to offering respect.

Knowing the power of music to unite & elevate, I know that these songs can create a real impact.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL FUND

Producing an album comes with great cost. The minimum funding goal is €9900 , which will cover the essential production costs needed to create this album. Anything that exceeds it, will go towards creating more music for you to enjoy, listen & learn! 

This is where the contributions will go:

1. Guest Musicians: 2000€
↠ The album will invite an array of professional, local Indonesian or Balinese musicians to contribute to the songs with percussion, flutes, gamelan, strings, additional vocals and so on. Your contribution will ensure that everyone will get a fair payment for their time & talents.

2. Studio Costs, Mixing & Mastering: 3000€
↠ This is the fee for the studio rental in Bali where vocals and instruments will be recorded, and to pay audio engineers also for the mixing & mastering of the songs.

3. Music Video, Album Art, Photography & Promotion: 3000€
↠ I wish to employ locally talented artists to create a powerful music video, a statement to remind us people of Bali to take care of this island. We will also create beautiful art to spread the message of this album to reach far & wide.
I'm trying my best to keep the budget low by doing a lot of directing & editing myself, but every additional contribution helps!

4. Salary to myself: 1200€
↠ In order to be able to deliver this album in the best possible quality for you receive it, and on a timely manner, I need to be able to dedicate myself fully for this project. As my entire income comes from gigs, classes & workshops I hold, it would mean that I would not be able to pay my bills for this period. Your support will help me to be able to fulfill this project while also taking care of myself, so that I can keep pouring from a full cup.

5. Fees: ca. 600€

ALBUM OVERVIEW
 

1. Memek Kauk
(Mother is Calling)
Inspired by traditional Balinese chants, this song calls people to how mother earth is crying and we need to remember our roots. Sung in Balinese and to be recorded with a soul-stirring choir and Balinese flutes. 

2. Pulau Dewata
(Island of Gods)
An easy, singalong song in Bahasa Indonesia that gives thanks to the island and the elements. I’ve often sung it in sweat lodges and singing circles, and it has inspired others already to learn it.

3. Bidadari
A chant to the Bidadari (celestial beings in Indonesian mysticism), the Sun, and Mother Earth. The lyrics in Balinese, but the song with harmonium, tabla, and violin give oriental feelings to it.

4. Prayer for Water
This song is very dear to me. A guitar song written in a blend of Spanish, English, Balinese and Sanskrit lyrics, it gives thanks to the sacred waters. I have sung it many times at Ecstatic Dance closings, and received feedback of how touching it has been to receive.

5. Sanghyang Agni
(Sacred Fire)
Inspired by Native American tipi songs, this is an energetic and powerful fire chant with traditional Native American instruments. Mostly in Indonesian, but also calling the deities of the fire in Mexica (Aztec) and Wixarika (Huichol) language.

6. Kembali Lagi
(Return Again)
A song inspired by the jungle and the medicines of the Amazon with rhythmic drums. Written in Spanish & Indonesian, it is a call to return and remember our roots and where we come from.

7. Anak Semesta
(Child of the Universe)
One of the last songs of the album, a reminder of our common source in Indonesian & English.

8. Pertiwi
(Earth)
My soothing love song for Mother Earth, source of life, in Bahasa Indonesia.

9. Shanti
(Peace)
In this song the chant of Balinese priests are highlighted with a traditional Balinese closing prayer.

Bonus Song: 

Ilumina

If the funding goal is exceeded, it will support the recording of a song for the Moon & the Sun - bridging the world through lyrics in Quechua, Spanish, Sanskrit, and Indonesian.

A daughter of the enchanting Balinese jungles and Swiss mountains, Purnama is a Balinese-Swiss singer-songwriter, ceremonialist, philosphy teacher and cultural guide.

With a passion to unite people in a shared journey of music, beauty, and devotion, she creates sacred spaces infused with ritual and medicine music. Descending from a lineage of Balinese priests and temple keepers, she carries a deep understanding of ceremony in her blood. Her artistic journey has also been shaped by her experience of supporting diverse traditional ceremonies from indigenous nations around world. This combination of heritage and experience is what makes her approach truly unique.

Purnama is committed to the cultural preservation of Bali and advocates for a more informed, conscious way for visitors to engage with the island. Having lived much of her life in the West, she naturally translates Balinese philosophy in ways that feel relatable. In her Balinese culture immersions, she helps people connect with its heart while encouraging deeper appreciation for the wisdom, values, and cultural beauty of the island.

Alongside her work as a cultural bridge, Purnama also sings in kirtans and at venues internationally, for example with the Hanuman Project, and shares her music and ceremonies with communities around the world.
