When you are going through a hard time, no matter how or why you get there and you receive a helping hand with comforting words letting you know that someone cares about you, at that precise moment all that weight becomes easier to carry.
Tonight more than 58,000 people are experiencing homelessness and loneliness in Chicago area. They come from China, Australia, Bosnia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, the Ojibwe lands of Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi, wealthy Chicago suburbs, the impoverished West Side and the old Irish Southwest Side.
“Chicago's most recent count of its homeless population shows that more than 3,500 people on a given night are living outside unsheltered and the true number is surely higher.
There are so many stories behind thousands looking for warmth around the city, some don’t even get a spot in shelters and take the risk to spend the night in CTA lines, in open land of Roosevelt Road, on the banks of the Chicago River farther north, below highway underpasses in the Pilsen neighborhood or under viaduct on the North Side lakefront.
