Maude’s biggest advantage is all of us!
On February 3, 2024, our friend Maude Poirier-Caron suffered two ischemic strokes while at home. The first thing for you to know is she is stable, and the recovery prognosis is optimistic.

Despite the impact of the strokes, which caused paralysis on her right-side and an inability to speak, Maude appears to have retained high cognitive functioning. Everyone who sees her agrees: she’s still observant, still communicative, still whip-smart, still bitingly funny even without speech — in short, she’s still Maude! The road to healing will be long, but we are already seeing significant strides. She is working hard to speak every day, and already has some movement back in her right leg.
Maude has recently been moved into a rehabilitation centre, the Centre Institut de réadaptation Gingras-Lindsay in Montreal. She’ll be there for anywhere from one to six months — there’s no way to tell yet. From what we’ve learned about stroke recovery, we can expect to see a lot of improvements in the first three months, and then we’ll hit a plateau where advancement becomes much more challenging. However, we also understand that for someone of Maude’s age, recovery outlooks are much better.
This fundraiser and email list is organized by a group of close friends who want to keep you in the loop with as much first-hand information as possible, and find as many ways as possible to support Maude and her family during this stressful and uncertain time. After talking with them, we've decided that the best support right now would be to help cover some expenses like rent, if you're able. Soon, we'll also be announcing other non-monetary ways to continue to help.
This emergency fund will help support Maude immediately and in the future, both before her social assistance kicks in, and in the future after it ends but before she is fully able to return to full-time work. We are hoping to raise at least a few months of living expenses, and to cover costs of other essentials, like care for her cat Harry, any supplies or alternative care that won't be covered by medicare, etc.
Maude has many, many strengths, but one that stands out is her ability to support and uplift everyone close to her.
