Melanie’s Cancer Story
Typically, this time of year is focused on weekend tournaments.
However, at the end of November during the varsity girls' volleyball
provincials, Melanie began experiencing significant pain. The
following weekend in Carman for a varsity boys basketball
tournament, her pain persisted despite taking Advil and Tylenol.
On December 11, Melanie visited the ER in Steinbach due to
severe pain in her side and back. Initial assessments suggested a
gall bladder issue, but further X-rays and scans revealed a cancer diagnosis.
On January 6, Melanie underwent a liver biopsy. The results,
received on January 27, confirmed a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma, a
rare and aggressive cancer. The disease originated in the muscle of
her bowel and has spread to her pancreas, liver, lungs, sternum, and
other areas.
On February 10, Melanie will have a port inserted at Boundary
Trails to begin chemotherapy the same day. Due to potential side
effects, she will remain at St. Boniface Hospital for at least three
days under the care of oncology staff. Chemo treatments are every
three weeks for a twelve week cycle.
This is the current situation. Melanie, Jon, and their family
are deeply grateful for your continued prayers and support.
