Who Is King Leo?
A laid-back, sweet 10 year old cat facing a
massive cancer removal surgery.
Back Story
Leo was taken in by our local Humane
Society in March of 2025. He was a 8 pound, 10 year old cat with 5
teeth, and no family of his own. He was on the adoption floor for 3
months with no interested adopters. In May he was diagnosed with
squamous cell carcinoma and was scheduled for surgery. After
reading about his story, this guy touched our hearts and we went to
meet him. He was such a laid back guy even in the shelter lobby.
Although he was not ready to come home, as he was awaiting his
surgery, we completed the adoption process so he could go home as
soon as it was complete. I picked him up June 2nd and brought him
home to heal and live out his senior years.
For the next 5 months Leo lived life
like a king. He melted the hearts of everyone he met, was the best
nap snuggler, and made our house his home. He was loved by all of
the resident cats, played with feather toys, watched birds in the
window and requested canned food daily. We tried to give him the
best we had to offer a sweet senior cat with a bit of a rough
past.
Then came October. We noticed Leo's
right ear was getting a bit swollen. We scheduled a vet
appointment. We got the news we did not want. The cancer was
back. It was also infected. After 2 weeks of antibiotics to reduce
the infection and swelling, we moved forward with surgery to once
again rid Leo of his cancer. Surgery went well. The remainder of
his right ear was removed and Leo healed up and returned to bird
watching, napping and begging for canned food.
Present day
Leo's right side of his head, where his last surgery removed the remaining ear flap is swollen with a tumor. After consulting with our primary vet we sought out a second opinion from an Oncology vet. Being a 4cm tumor, radiation therapy as a sole treatment would not be favorable. So first we need a massive surgery.
A total ear canal ablation (TECA) is schedule to be preformed to remove the aggressive tumor with hopefully larger margins of clear tissue. To prepare for the surgery, Leo had chest x-rays, and a lymph node aspirate which showed no evidence of cancer spreading. This type of cancer typically stays localized to the ear/ facial area.
Without treatment this aggressive cancer gives a life expectancy of a few months. With aggressive surgery, and potentially radiation afterward, we are looking to add years to his life!!!
Help us give Leo a cancer free Christmas. Surgery is scheduled for December 23rd. Surgery estimate is $10,000 and radiation afterwards will be approximately $10,000. Anything helps! Thank you for donating and sharing 🐱 😻
